ABOUT Outside / In with Ormao Dance Company
The Aspen Dance Connection presents OUTSIDE/IN 2.0, dedicated to the uniqueness of TACAW. ADC guest choreographer Jan Johnson, Artistic Director of ORMAO Dance Company, will create a site-specific performance with her professional company and our local dancers to be performed outdoors on the grounds of TACAW. The rich beauty of the outside spaces provides inspiration for the choreography and a beautiful backdrop for the performers.
The company performs in wildly original non-traditional spaces such as art museums, abandoned buildings, and construction zones. Last year they performed outdoors at the Olympic Museum in Colorado Springs. During Covid they created CURBSIDE CULTURE, taking small scale dance events to people’s driveway, porch, businesses and gathering spots.
After they dance outdoors on the raw earth, ORMAO dancers move into TACAW’s theatre and perform intriguing dances from their repertoire that provokes, challenges, and entertains the audience. ORMAO (pronounced or-MY-oh) stems from an ancient Greek term movement with force.
Aspen Dance Connection (ADC) presented annual Colorado Juried Dance Showcases at the Wheeler Opera House for 34 years, featuring 8-10 choreographers’ original dance per show. Guest artists included David Taylor, Judy Bejarano, Amy Anderson, Gregory Gonzeles, and Chung-Fu Chang. Other guest artists performed full evenings of their own work: Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble, Joyce Trisler Dance Company, Stacyee Pearl dance project, and explorer Jon Turk with Weber Dance.
ADC also presented many site-specific outdoor performances: on the grounds of the old Aspen Art Museum, Aspen Meadows, Ajax Mountain during Winterskol, and more. ADC is known for its’ extensive outreach programs, taking original and world dance into schools and libraries from Aspen to Parachute, reaching thousands of kids.
