ABOUT High Country Sinfonia

High Country Sinfonia’s spring concert series, “Chopin!,” is full of drama, adventure and romance with works by Frederic Chopin, C.P.E. Bach, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

High Country Sinfonia’s founder and board president Wendy Larson announced the program saying,

“After our smorgasbord of short pieces last fall, we are taking a more traditional concert approach this spring with two full-length multi-movement pieces – a Romantic era piano concerto and a Baroque string symphony. And what better way to finally welcome spring and look forward to summer in the mountains than Tchaikovsky’s lush and lovely opening cello chorale to his “1812 Overture.”

Charlotte McLain, High Country Sinfonia’s Baroque expert, selected C.P.E. Bach’s Sinfonia No. 2 in B-flat. About the piece, Ms. McLain wrote, “Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (son of J.S. Bach), was an important transition composer between the Baroque and Classical periods of music. The whiplash starts and stops of this piece create turbulent drama contrasted by sensitive style. His zigs and zags almost seem quirky, but the overall adventurous style provides a challenge perfect for string groups like High Country Sinfonia.”

The Romantic-era Chopin piano concerto has been called by Classic FM, “unashamedly heart-on-your-sleeve stuff, with Chopin allowing the rich sounds of the piano to be cushioned by some gloriously rich string accompaniment.” These performances will mark the first for guest soloist Kevin Kaukl with High Country Sinfonia and provide the audience with the rare opportunity to hear a complete concerto performed by local artists.
