ABOUT Death of THE Pugilist

Genre: Multi-genre musical storytelling

“What is a pugilist?A pugilist is a boxer.

What is ‘Death of the Pugilist?”
A short story by American novelist Daniel Mason, set in early 19th century England where, rising from a childhood of rough dockside brawls, a young bare-knuckle fighter faces off against a legendary behemoth.

In a performance that is the very essence of chamber music, this quintet sets Daniel Mason’s story to music, spanning J.S. Bach to Philip Glass, to blues and Irish traditional tunes, in a way that transcends each individual element, and becomes its own masterpiece.

Nothing about this production follows any preconceptions. It’s a brilliant experimental ensemble piece of talent and split-second timing, that throws open the door for an original experience of narrative, sound, silence and suspense.”
