ABOUT BLUES AND NEWS
Join the Aspen Daily News and TACAW for Blues & News, an unforgettable evening celebrating one year of community-supported journalism via the Aspen Daily News Journalism Fund! This special member appreciation and fundraising event combines live music, local flavor, and the spirit of independent media — all in one night under the lights.
George Kilby Jr. brings his signature Americana blues sound to TACAW’s stage for an intimate performance you won’t want to miss. Born in Alabama and forged in the NYC blues scene of the ’80s and ’90s, Kilby spent decades performing alongside legendary Pinetop Perkins, the famed pianist for Muddy Waters. Now based in New Orleans with strong ties to upstate New York, his music is as seasoned as it is soulful.
Expect small bites, yard games, a silent auction, and the kind of storytelling and rhythm that keep this valley vibrant. Proceeds support the Aspen Daily News Journalism Fund — helping keep local news truly local and free.
Come for the blues. Stay for the news. Leave with your faith in journalism restored.
ABOUT GEORGE KILBY, JR.
Genre: Roots Rock / Americana / BLUES
George Kilby Jr. was born in Alabama; and the sounds of the South have never left him. Roots-Rock or Americana fit well enough, but the band has a sound all its own. Along with great songwriting, Kilby’s unique approach to the blues features unconventional instrumentation, often using accordion and baritone sax. Added to the mix are influences from country music, Professor Longhair, and the Allman Brothers. As well, evidence of George’s 20 years with the legendary Pinetop Perkins always show up in his repertoire. In a recent review, Jamband’s.com says: “It’s a cool showcase for Kilby’s fingerpicking work – but pay attention to the words. One trademark of Kilby’s originals is the use of a deceptively down-to-earth approach to lay some deeper-than-you-may-think wisdom on the table.” His recent collaborations with members of the Jamgrass phenomenon Railroad Earth and the late harmonica wizard Phil Wiggins add to the depth of his sound. George has taken his music from the road-houses of the Southeast to New York City and on to the major music festivals of Europe. His sound has been called everything from New Orleans R&B to Alternative Country.
