The Roaring Fork Valley has no shortage of talented songwriters with talented friends from afar. Join us for the first TACAW Songwriter’s Round where participants will take turns playing a song and chatting about process and inspiration. \n\n\n\nThis edition is hosted by Jackson Emmer and features Susan Gibson and David Starr. \n\n\n\nJackson Emmer is an award-winning singer\, songwriter\, and producer from Carbondale\, Colorado. His work blends humor with heartache\, and tradition with exploration. Emmer’s writing is often compared to that of John Prine and Guy Clark. He has toured the US since 2009\, collaborated with Grammy-winners\, and received grants & awards for his music in Texas and Colorado. \n\n\n\nSusan Gibson is a Wimberley\, Texas-based singer and songwriter who has released six solo albums and tours the nation. Gibson was the lead singer for the alternative country band\, The Groobees\, and is the writer of the Dixie Chicks hit “Wide Open Spaces”. \n\n\n\nDavid Starr possesses “a compelling voice\, something truly special\, both accessible and passionate” (Elmore)\, that has been honed releasing nine albums\, touring internationally\, and opening shows for esteemed artists such as John Oates (Hall & Oates)\, Karla Bonoff\, The Steel Wheels\, Survivor\, and more.  \n\n\n\nStarr’s prestige extends beyond the stage as well\, having launched Starr’s Guitars in Little Rock in 1998\, then relocating to Cedaredge in 2001. Today\, the store is such an institution that Cedaredge proclaimed the musician’s birthday as David Starr Day in 2016. Starr was also instrumental in the 2018 opening of the Grand Mesa Arts Center\, an intimate event space brought to fruition through strong community support in Cedaredge\, CO. Sapphire began doing drag when the pandemic first hit in 2020 and it quickly became a way to express that inner beauty she/he had felt in her/his heart. He/she will give you glam and even a laugh. It’s actually Sapphire’s first time ever performing in-front of an audience in drag but she/he couldn’t be more honored to share the glam and the love w/ everyone. \n\n\n\nZamora (Aristotle Beachey): Zamora is an Intergalactic Genderless Jesus who’s drag blends\, shifts\, and reforms as she does. Zamora is new to the drag scene\, but has always thought of it as a “missing piece” in their life. Finally here\, fully queer\, Zamora is excited to show off how unconventional and fun both drag and life can be! \n\n\n\nZen Fatale (Trinity Stebleton): Zen Fatale is a self-described “Queen from Birth.” Zen Fatale has performed in drag since her teens. Long before bio/hyper Queens were mainstream\, she was lip-synching\, dancing and performing live. She is thrilled to “dust off” her drag\, and bring it to the valley she has called home for many years. \n\n\n\n Ramona Chingona (Bryan Alvarez-Terrazas): Ramona Chingona was born in Glenwood Springs and is a local diva. Ramona is a body-positive queen that knows how to bring it on the dance floor. Ramona saw that there wasn’t a local drag scene in the valley\, so she decided to do something about it. Mr. Cleary joins us for a special solo performance. \n\n\n\nJon Cleary’s love and affinity for New Orleans music goes back to the rural British village of Cranbrook\, Kent\, where he was raised in a musical family. Cleary’s maternal grandparents performed in London in the 1940s\, under the respective stage names Sweet Dolly Daydream and Frank Neville\, The Little Fellow With The Educated Feet – she as a singer\, and he as a crooner and tap dancer. \n\n\n\nAs a teen Cleary grew increasingly interested in funk-infused music and discovered that three such songs that he particularly admired – Patti LaBelle’s “Lady Marmalade\,” Robert Palmer’s version of “Sneakin’ Sally \n\n\n\nThrough the Alley\,” and Frankie Miller’s rendition of “Brickyard Blues” – were attributed to Allen Toussaint as either the songwriter\, the producer\, or both. Cleary’s knowledge of Toussaint’s work expanded significantly when his uncle returned home to the U.K.\, after a two-year sojourn in New Orleans\, with a copy of a Toussaint LP and two suitcases full of New Orleans R&B 45s. In 1981 Cleary flew to New Orleans for an initial pilgrimage and took a cab straight from the airport to the Maple Leaf Bar\, a storied venue which then featured such great blues-rooted eclectic pianists as Roosevelt Sykes and James Booker. Cleary first worked at the Maple Leaf as a painter\, but soon graduated to playing piano there even though his first instrument was the guitar\, which he still plays and has recently reintroduced into his live performances. \n\n\n\nAs word of Cleary’s burgeoning talent began to spread around town\, he was hired by such New Orleans R&B legends as Snooks Eaglin\, Earl “Trick Bag” King\, Johnny Adams\, and Jessie “Ooh Poo Pah Doo” Hill\, while also gaining the respect of the great Crescent City pianists Dr. John and the late Allen Toussaint\, himself. Years later\, in 2012\, Cleary recorded a critically acclaimed album of all Toussaint songs entitled Occapella. \n\n\n\nToday\, Cleary’s work pays obvious homage to the classic Crescent City keyboard repertoire created by such icons as Jelly Roll Morton\, Fats Domino\, Professor Longhair\, Art Neville\, Dr. John\, and James Booker – while also using it as a launching pad for a style that incorporates such other diverse influences as ’70s soul and R&B\, gospel music\, funk\, Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Cuban rhythms\, and much more. \n\n\n\nDeciding to stay in New Orleans\, Cleary recorded his first album of nine\, to date\, in 1989. \n\n\n\nHis ever-elevating profile led to global touring work in the bands of Taj Mahal\, John Scofield\, Dr. John\, and Bonnie Raitt. Cleary has led his own group\, the Absolute Monster Gentlemen\, for over two decades now\, but he still collaborates frequently with these old friends. Dooley3:45 – 4:15 – Thomas Csorba4:25 – 5:00 – KaiL Baxley\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKail Baxley \n\n\n\n“He could literally sing the phone book and bring you to tears.” The warm\, raspy\, honey-soaked voice of a troubadour lived well beyond his years. His is a story with many layers and moving parts. The classic breed of the folk hero born poor in the rich southern soul of a small South Carolina town. But Baxley would have none of that. A humble quiet type that sums his accolades up to over sensationalism. The outlaw parents\, the impoverished youth\, the golden glove medals\, the gunshot wounds. He refers to them as over-glorified and “not much worth looking back on”. It’s the sap at the core of a solid oak. A well that runs deep and plentiful. And the curse and blessing of those true songwriters that come ever so seldom a generation. \n\n\n\nThomas Csorba \n\n\n\nThis Texas based Americana artist is spending some time in our valley. We are fortunate to have him grace our lawn. His latest release is a collection of western songs with a touch of the dust bowl blues. Thomas spins expansive tales with a cast of aimless travelers\, stubbled loners and yellowing family portraits. \n\n\n\nJamie K. Dooley \n\n\n\nJamie Klee Dooley is a singer/songwriter who began her professional career in the Los Angeles area where she played the club circuit including the iconic Palamino and Coconut Teaser.  In the 1980’s she and her husband moved to Nashville Tennessee where she regularly performed at the Bluebird Cafe. In 1992 she was fortunate enough to receive a gold record for a song she wrote with fellow co-writer Mark Elliot called “Making Ends Meet” which was recorded by the late Chris LeDoux on his Watcha Gonna Do With A Cowboy album.
