It’s there on the map\, marking place and time. Yet\, the river changes as it remains a constant\, carving away at the edges\, making new pathways\, gaining strength as it progresses forward. The Travelin’ McCourys are that river. \n\n\n\nThe McCoury brothers- Ronnie (mandolin) and Rob (banjo) – were born into the bluegrass tradition. Talk about a source abundant and pure: their father\, Del\, is among the most influential and successful musicians in the history of the genre. Years on the road with Dad in the Del McCoury Band honed their knife-edge chops\, and encouraged the duo to imagine how traditional bluegrass could cut innovative pathways into 21st century music. \n\n\n\n“If you put your mind\, your skills\, and your ability to it\, I think you can make just about anything work on bluegrass instruments\,” says Ronnie. “That’s a really fun part of this- figuring the new stuff out and surprising the audience.” \n\n\n\nWith fiddler Jason Carter\, bassist Alan Bartram\, and latest recruit Cody Kilby on guitar\, they assembled a group that could take what they had in their DNA\, take what traditions they learned and heard\, and push the music forward. In fact\, the band became the only group to have each of its members recognized with an International Bluegrass Music Association Award for their instrument at least once. There were peers\, too\, that could see bluegrass as both historic and progressive. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees The Allman Brothers Band\, improv-rock kings Phish\, and jamband contemporary Keller Williams were just a few that formed a mutual admiration society with the ensemble. \n\n\n\nThe band played the Allman’s Wanee Festival\, and guitarist Warren Haynes’ Christmas jam- an annual holiday homecoming of Southern music. An early-years jam with the Lee Boys was hailed by many as the highlight of the evening\, and with the video catching fire online\, earned a legion of new\, young fans of their supercharged combination of sacred steel\, R&B\, and bluegrass. There were unforgettable collaborations with country smash Dierks Bentley\, and onstage magic\, jamming with titans String Cheese Incident and Phish\, cutting an album with Keller (Pick)\, and creating the Grateful Ball- a tribute concert-turned-tour bridging bluegrass with the iconic music of the Grateful Dead. \n\n\n\n“That’s something that’s part of us being who we are\,” says Ronnie. “It comes\, too\, with us plugging in. It gets louder\, for sure. We can’t be another version of our dad’s band. It wouldn’t make any sense for us to do that.” \n\n\n\nTheir concerts became can’t-miss events\, whether headlining historic venues or as festival favorites\, drawing the love and respect of a growing fanbase craving their eclectic repertoire. At the 2016 edition of DelFest\, an annual gathering of the genre’s best aptly named for the McCoury patriarch\, the band delivered the take-away highlight. Rolling Stone called it “a sublime combination of rock and bluegrass\, contemporary and classic\, old and young. The best set of the festival…” The river was going new places\, getting stronger. It was time to re-draw the map. \n\n\n\n“We’ve tried to pick songs we think people are going to enjoy\,” says Ronnie. “Something we learned from our dad is that a good song is a good song. It can be done in any way.” \n\n\n\nSo arrives the long-awaited\, self-titled debut album from the quintet. A brilliantly executed set overflowing with inventive style\, stellar musicianship\, and\, of course\, plenty of burnin’ grass\, the 14-song collection is a true culmination of their decades-long journey. From the headwaters of Bill Monroe and the waves of Jerry Garcia to a sound both rooted and revolutionary\, soulful and transcending that belongs only to the Travelin’ McCourys. \n\n\n\n“The album definitely shows what we’ve evolved into as a band. And\, it’s a pretty good representation of what’s happening with the whole genre\,” says Rob. “The old bluegrass material is something I love but it’s been done many times. We’re forging ahead with our own sound. That’s what you have to do to make it all work.” \n\n\n\n…and the accolades continue to come. The Travelin’ McCourys were honored by the International Bluegrass Music Association in 2018 as the Instrumental Group of the Year. The group had just finished an Outlaw Country Cruise when the pandemic hit and sent them into their homes on lockdown. \n\n\n\nInstead of a triumphant tour marking the illustrious landmark\, Farrar was forced indoors by the pandemic\, and his “Reverie” during that time helped define Electro Melodier\, Son Volt’s 10th studio album – and third for influential Nashville indie Thirty Tigers. The title\, taken from the names of two vintage amplifiers from the late ‘40s and early ‘50s\, also describes the disc’s unique blend of folk\, country\, blues\, soul and rock – an electric troubadour with melodies that hit and stick. Social protest songs like “Living in the U.S.A.” and “The Globe\,” the former about the promises of this nation gone wrong\, the latter referencing the street protests accompanying the Black Lives Matter movement\, exist side by side with odes to long-term relationships (specifically his 25-year marriage) in “Diamonds and Cigarettes” and “Lucky Ones.” \n\n\n\nOnce again accompanied by the current Son Volt line up – keyboardist/steel guitarist Mark Spencer\, bassist Andrew Duplantis\, guitarist Chris Frame and drummer Mark Patterson – Farrar takes a slight turn from 2019’s politically pointed Union to a series of songs that asks questions rather than demanding answers – think of “Living in the U.S.A.” as Farrar’s version of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.\,” Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World” or Patti Smith’s “People Have the Power\,” an anthem to unite the populace. \n\n\n\n“I had more time to devote to and concentrate on the writing\,” says Farrar about his enforced quarantine. “We were fortunate in that we had just released Union and toured the country\, so we were off cycle. It was still a rough year\, but as a songwriter\, I was able to make the most of it.” \n\n\n\nOne listen to Electro Melodier\, which opens with “Reverie\,” describing Farrar’s contemplative state gazing out his window\, enlivened with Mark Spencer’s “Wichita Lineman” guitar riffs and the lush Big Star melodies\, and you wonder why no other rock ‘n’ roll bands or singer/songwriters are making albums like this about what we’re all going through. \n\n\n\n“I wanted to concentrate on the melodies which got me into music in the first place\,” says Farrar. “I wanted politics to take a back seat this time\, but it always seems to find a way back in there.” \n\n\n\nListen to the Moog line from The Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again” channeled in “The Globe\,” or the Led Zeppelin homage in “Someday Is Now\,” the nod to gut-bucket Mississippi delta blues in the Lightnin’ Hopkins low-tuned guitar stylings of “War on Misery” or Spencer’s haunting slide on the funereal dirge of “The Levee On Down\,” which takes Andrew Jackson to task for everything from the “Trail of Tears” massacre of the Cherokees to his face on the $20 bill instead of Harriet Tubman. The environmentally conscious “Arkey Blue” nods to a honky-tonk in Bandera\, TX\, Arkey Blue’s Silver Dollar\, where Hank Williams\, Sr. allegedly carved his name into one of the wood tables\, and even quotes Pope Francis on “turbulent rains never before seen.” \n\n\n\n“I’m just asking the same question\, how can so much go wrong in a country that is held up as an example to the world of something righteous\,” explains Farrar about songs like “Living in the U.S.A.\,” in which you can hear doomsaying prophecies like Barry McGuire’s “Eve of Destruction” set to the guitar riffs of Lou Reed’s “Sweet Jane.” \n\n\n\nStill based in St. Louis (“It kinda makes sense as a central location for touring because all the interstates connect through here”)\, Farrar was born in Belleville\, IL\, where he formed Uncle Tupelo with his high school classmate Jeff Tweedy. “We had similar musical interests and took it from there\,” says Jay modestly about the groundbreaking group. \n\n\n\nFarrar is grateful to his wife of 25 years\, a sentiment which he expresses lovingly on “Diamonds and Cigarettes” – featuring vocals by country singer Laura Cantrell\, along with songs like the soulful “Lucky Ones” and “Sweet Refrain\,” a song that captures the spirit of Bentonia\, Mississippi\, home of Skip James along with name checks for local legends Jimmy “Duck” Holmes and the Bluefront Cafe. “These are the Times” was recorded entirely remotely by Zoom\, signaling one of the new methods of making music ushered in by Covid. \n\n\n\n“It’s a good time to take stock of what’s lost and what’s gained\,” said Farrar. “At this point\, we’re not even sure what we’re going to get back.” \n\n\n\nThe songs of Electro Melodier help remind us to be thankful of what we still have – new music from Jay Farrar and Son Volt. \n\n\n\n“Daylight brings the clues to the world to life/Make or break gotta do what it takes to survive.” “Sweet Refrain” \n\n\n\nLearn more about Son Volt: Website\, Facebook\, Instagram\, Twitter\, Spotify or Youtube. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT JACK BROADBENT \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn each album\, Jack Broadbent is used to people saying\, “Oh\, this is a departure from your previous stuff.” That’s something the British-born singer\, songwriter and guitarist has heard to varying degrees\, over the course of his six albums to date\, and is certainly fitting of his latest release\, RIDE. As someone who is as connected to the quality of his relationships with people as he is to the quality of his music\, rest assured he considers that a compliment. \n\n\n\n“I think there’s a lot of variety on my records. This is no different\,” Broadbent says. “I’m really getting a sense now that this idea of genre and where you fit in is not as important as it used to be — which I think is good.” \n\n\n\nBroadbent grew up in rural Lincolnshire\, England. His earliest influence\, his father\, Mick Broadbent\, plays bass on RIDE and is a well-established musician\, including a tenure with Bram Tchaikovsky. “I fell in love with music at a young age\,” he says\, informed by the steady diet of music played around the house. His father would take Broadbent to open mic nights as a youth\, and by his early teens he was playing drums in his dad’s bands. Broadbent gravitated to guitar around the same time as he became interested in song writing. \n\n\n\n“Being a drummer\, I tried to develop a very rhythmic approach to my guitar playing\,” Broadbent recalls. “What interested me was being able to hold down a groove and do some gymnastics to incorporate solos and subtle bass lines.” \n\n\n\nBroadbent’s slide guitar playing evolved from the busking he did during his early 20s. “It seemed to appeal to people as something that was both visually and musically exciting. It’s how I emote\,” Mendoza says. Armed with the emotionality of traditional música Mexicana and the storytelling of American folk\, Y La Bamba’s artistry is not just their musical ability but Mendoza’s search for unadulterated truth. It is in an ancestral\, spiritual journey in which Mendoza comes to terms with the influence and limitations of her upbringing. He was one of the first of the new wave of singers and songwriters to embrace unabashedly soulful music and he has been tearing up stages all over the world with his heart- stopping falsetto screams for more than a decade with no plans to slow down. From humble musical beginnings growing up outside of Boston\, at 18 Reed moved to Clarksdale\, Mississippi and cut his teeth playing and singing in juke joints all over the Delta. From there he took the well-trod path to Chicago where he spent a year as minister of music the Southside church of Soul legend Mitty Collier. \n\n\n\nStarting in 2013 Reed began teaching at an after-school music education based in Harlem called for Gospel for Teens during his breaks from touring. The program worked with at-risk youth from around the New York City area and Reed specifically began teaching these young men about Gospel Quartet music\, its history and harmony. Out of those classes emerged a new project that Reed dubbed The Harlem Gospel Travelers. He produced\, arranged and played guitar on their debut album which came out on the revered soul label Colemine records in 2019 to rave reviews. Now The Harlem Gospel Travelers are at work on their second full-length and have begun conquering festival stages as well. \n\n\n\nNow approaching the 15-year mark in his career and finishing up his 8th album\, Reed has improbably become an elder statesman of the genre\, and he’s begun seeing new artists who are taking inspiration from his unique sound. This feature-length documentary\, filmed during the reporting of the 2022 Colorado Book Award-winner for nonfiction\, won the Audience Award at its premiere at the 2022 Telluride Mountain film festival. The film will be followed by a community conversation featuring the author/filmmaker and the film’s main subject. Signed copies of the book will be available for sale through Bookbinders. \n\n\n\nTHE HOLLY goes deep inside a gentrifying community in Denver\, where a shooting case involving an activist becomes a window into the political machinations of urban development and the city’s gang activity. \n\n\n\nTerrance Roberts is a former gang leader who appears to have escaped his past. After ten years in prison\, he returned to his historic Denver community as an activist whose work won him awards and made him the face of a high-profile redevelopment of one of the city’s civil rights landmarks\, Holly Square. But\, as the development was coming to fruition\, Roberts shocked the city by shooting a young gang member—at his own peace rally. \n\n\n\nJournalist Julian Rubinstein\, who grew up in Denver\, returns home to look into the case and finds himself caught up in a world of informants\, gang members\, activists and developers uneasily coexisting in a rapidly gentrifying community—while covertly working together on a federally funded law enforcement operation. A coalescence of community\, fashion\, training\, introspection\, liberation\, and individual journeys\, Passion Fruit explores how the groove can be a road map to social justice through the physical expression of Black culture” (Mass MoCA\, 2021). It is incredible hip hop storytelling with an all-female cast of international dancers.
