SUMMARY:Equity Speaker Series Reverence for Life on the Streets: Medicine as a Moral Act in an Unequal World
DESCRIPTION:Reverence for Life on the Streets:\n\n\n\nMedicine as a Moral Act in an Unequal World \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPROGRAM @ 6:30PM / DOORS @ 5:30PM \n\n\n\nFREE WITH RSVP \n\n\n\nSEATED | ALL AGES (UNDER 18 MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A LEGAL GUARDIAN) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH ASPEN HISTORICAL SOCIETYFOUR RSVPS PER PERSON \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFREE WITH RSVP\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT REVERENCE FOR LIFE ON THE STREETS: MEDICINE AS A MORAL ACT IN AN UNEQUAL WORLD\n\n\n\nGENRE: PANEL DISCUSSSION \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn the eve of Aspen’s second Albert Schweitzer Day\, three of the world’s most consequential voices in humanitarian medicine will share the TACAW stage for a public conversation about care\, conscience\, and the demands of this moment. \n\n\n\nHarsh Mander\, New Delhi-based civil rights leader and Nobel Peace Prize nominee\, has spent decades fighting for the rights of the poorest and most excluded\, building a body of work spanning landmark litigation\, legislation\, and some of the most important writing on poverty\, displacement\, and human dignity in the world. Dr. Jim O’Connell\, founder of Boston Health Care for the Homeless and the subject of Tracy Kidder’s Rough Sleepers\, has built one of the most enduring models of compassionate urban medicine globally. Dr. Jim Withers\, founder of the Street Medicine Institute and last year’s Schweitzer lecturer in Aspen\, is the father of street medicine and has spent over thirty years taking medicine directly to people living on the streets. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Kaitlin Schwan\, human rights activist and street medicine scholar. \n\n\n\nTogether\, they have answered the same call through radically different paths. In a time of rising nationalism\, austerity\, and the systematic withdrawal of care from the most vulnerable\, their work asks a question Schweitzer posed from this very city in 1949: what does it mean to preserve our humanity? \n\n\n\nABOUT ASPEN HISTORICAL SOCIETY \n\n\n\nAspen Historical Society actively preserves and passionately presents our local history in an inspired and provocative manner that will continue to anchor our community and its evolving character. We enhance the lives of those with whom we work and live. We offer a compelling reason to live in and to visit Aspen/Snowmass. \n\n\n\nLearn more about Aspen Historical Society: WEBSITE / FACEBOOK / INSTAGRAM / TWITTER / YOUTUBE \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPanelists: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHarsh Mander \n\n\n\nHarsh Mander\, human rights and peace worker\, writer\, columnist\, researcher and teacher is Chairperson\, Centre for Equity Studies\, devoted to the analysis and development of public policy and law for justice and rights of disadvantaged groups. To counter rising hate violence and lynching\, he leads the national initiative called the Karwan e Mohabbat www.karwanemohabbat.in or Caravan of Love\, for atonement\, solidarity\, healing\, conscience and justice. \n\n\n\nHe is a PhD from Vrije University in Amsterdam. His thesis was titled Vulnerable People and Policy Development in India: Designing State Interventions for Hunger\, Homelessness\, Destitution and Targeted Violence. He is visiting faculty in the South Asia Institute\, Heidelberg University\, Germany and Vrije University\, Amsterdam\, Holland. \n\n\n\nA prolific writer\, his 30 books include: ‘Under Grey Smoggy Skies: Living Homeless on the Streets of India’s Cities’; ‘A Matter of Life and Death: The Unfinished Journey to Secure Healthcare for All’; ‘Partitions of the Heart: Unmaking the Idea of India’; ‘Burning Pyres\, Mass Graves and a State That Failed Its People: India’s Covid Tragedy’; ‘Looking Away: Inequality\, Prejudice and Indifference in New India’; and ‘Ash in the Belly: India’s Unfinished Battle against Hunger’.As Member of the Indian Prime Minister’s National Advisory Council from June 2010-12\, he helped draft many social rights legislations including the National Food Security Bill. \n\n\n\nHe was Special Commissioner to the Supreme Court of India in the Right to Food case for twelve years from 2005-17\, during which time he investigated starvation deaths\, and reviewed implementation and directed public policy reform for advancing the right to food and nutrition in several states in India. He was a Richard von Weizsacker Fellow of the Robert Bosch Academy\, Berlin in 2021-22. He was member and chairperson of the Advisory Board of Human Rights Initiative of Open Societies Foundation from 2018-21. He was also Council Member of Progressive International. \n\n\n\nHe helped initiate a number of initiatives for homeless people\, including street medicine and recovery shelters in many cities and over 60 residential schools for homeless children. \n\n\n\nHe has made many significant interventions in India’s highest courts. For instance:his petition to decriminalize beggary was allowed\, which ended begging as a crime after nearly a hundred years. His petition in the Supreme Court resulted in the reopening for investigation of over 2000 criminal cases related to the Gujarat carnage of 2002 which had been closed without trial. A series of his interventions in the Supreme Court as Commissioner led to orders making homeless shelters a legal duty for all state governments. He petitioned against the detention of undocumented people deemed to be ‘foreigners’ in jails in inhuman conditions in Assam for nearly a decade; he petitioned for food and livelihood security of migrants during the covid pandemic. \n\n\n\nThe Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg awarded him their inaugural Human Rights Award 2022. The Peace Research Institute Oslo has included him in its 2022 shortlist of people recommended for the Nobel Peace PrizeHe was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of York in 2024. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJames J. O’Connell\, MD – President\, Boston Health Care for the Homeless ProgramAssistant Professor of Medicine\, Harvard Medical School \n\n\n\nDr. O’Connell graduated summa cum laude from the University of Notre Dame in 1970 and received his master’s degree in theology from Cambridge University in 1972. After graduating from Harvard Medical School in 1982\, he completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). In 1985\, Dr. O’Connell began fulltime clinical work with homeless individuals as the founding physician of the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program\, which now serves over 10\,000 homeless individuals and families each year in two hospital-based clinics (Boston Medical Center and MGH) and in 30 shelters and outreach sites\, and on the streets of Boston. With his colleagues\, Dr. O’Connell established the nation’s first medical respite program for homeless persons in September 1985\, with 25 beds in the Lemuel Shattuck Shelter. This innovative program now provides acute and sub-acute\, pre- and post-operative\, and palliative and end-of-life care in the freestanding 104-bed Barbara McInnis House. Working with the MGH Laboratory of Computer Science\, Dr. O’Connell designed and implemented the nation’s first computerized medical record for a homeless program in 1995. \n\n\n\nFrom 1989 until 1996\, Dr. O’Connell served as the National Program Director of the Homeless Families Program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Dr. O’Connell is the editor of The Health Care of Homeless Persons: A Manual of Communicable Diseases and Common Problems in Shelters and on the Streets. His articles have appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine\, the Journal of the American Medical Association\, Circulation\, the American Journal of Public Health\, the Journal of Clinical Ethics\, and several other medical journals. \n\n\n\nDr. O’Connell has been featured on ABC’s Nightline\, CBS Evening News and in several feature-length documentaries including Give Me a Shot of Anything and The Antidote. He has received numerous honorary degrees and awards\, including the Albert Schweitzer Humanitarian Award in 2012 and The Trustees’ Medal at the bicentennial celebration of MGH in 2011. Dr. O’Connell has collaborated with homeless programs in many cities in the USA and across the globe\, including Los Angeles\, London\, and Sydney. Dr. O’Connell’s book Stories from the Shadows: Reflections of a Street Doctor was published in 2015 in celebration of BHCHP’s 30th anniversary. In 2023\, Dr. O’Connell work was chronicled by Pulitzer Prize winning author\, Tracy Kidder in Rough Sleepers\, Dr. Jim O’Connell’s Urgent Mission to Bring Healing to Homeless People. Dr. O’Connell is president of BHCHP and an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJim Withers \n\n\n\nIn 1992\, teaching physician Dr. Jim Withers dressed as a homeless person and joined a formerly homeless man to visit the street dwellers of Pittsburgh\, making “house calls” at night. This initiative led to the program\, Operation Safety Net (OSN) that brings medical care and social services directly to the unsheltered homeless. It also serves as a pioneering “classroom of the streets” for students of various disciplines to learn the principles of reality-based care. Over 80 medical schools now have associated street medicine programs. \n\n\n\nIn 2005\, Dr. Withers established the annual International Street Medicine Symposium to foster collaboration in the care of those sleeping on the streets. There are now collaborating organizations on every continent. In 2009\, Dr. Withers and others created the non-profit Street Medicine Institute to promote the global practice of street medicine. Dr. Withers also created the first Street Medicine Fellowship in 2019 at the UPMC Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh. \n\n\n\nDr. Withers is in practice with the Pittsburgh Mercy health system\, on the Internal Medicine teaching faculty of UPMC Mercy Hospital and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nModerator: Kaitlin Schwan\, Phd \n\n\n\nKaitlin Schwan is an Associate Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Southern California and Director of the California Street Medicine Collaborative. Schwan holds an appointment as an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto’s Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work and is a Senior Researcher at the Canadian Observatory on Homelessness. Whether that’s through incisive lyrics or a sound they crafted that’s become mainstream\, the group of troubadours has been steadfast in their truth. On the band’s upcoming album\, titled Country Sides\, The Band of Heathens takes a look back at their career with gratitude and great satisfaction. \n\n\n\nFormed in 2005\, the Heathens broke into the public consciousness in 2009 with their heartfelt blend of country and rock\, including memorable performances at Austin City Limits on PBS and the Austin City Limits Festival. Since then\, members have come and gone\, but principal songwriters Ed Jurdi and Gordy Quist give the band its collective focus and provide the DNA to the songs beloved by folks around the globe. \n\n\n\nFor a band that’s accomplished so much and on their own terms\, the approach for this album was natural and felt right. The themes addressed on this album\, such as the reflective\, contemplative nature of the lyrical matter\, led to questions like “What’s next?” As always\, The Band of Heathens is debating what that future looks like. It certainly includes more music and touring. But\, in what fashion? Not even they know. That said\, their music continues to live on. Look no further than the success of 2011’s “Hurricane. Nearly 15 years later\, the song went gold and has since been certified platinum\, showcasing the band’s resonant sound. And\, at this point in their career\, they’re perfectly content with what they’re doing. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\n\nVIEW CALENDAR\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDETAILS \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDoors open for show @ 7:00pm / Show @ 8:00pm\n\n\n\nSTANDING ROOM | 18+ VALID PHOTO ID REQUIRED\n\n\n\nLocation: TACAW\, 400 Robinson St\, Basalt\, CO 81621\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented By: TACAW

Each week the podcast features an in-depth interview with a fiction\, non-fiction\, essay\, or poetry writer. The show is equal parts investigation into the craft of writing and conversation about the topics of an author’s work. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE WRECK OF THE MENTOR \n\n\n\nThe Wreck of the Mentor is the story of the American whaleship Mentor\, wrecked in 1832 on a remote reef in the western Pacific. With supplies dwindling\, the eleven surviving crewmen face not only the miseries of shipwreck in unfamiliar territory but also the profound uncertainty of contact with the Indigenous people of the Micronesian archipelago of Palau\, who within days approach the deserted men brandishing axes\, clubs\, and spears. In this gripping saga of cultural collision\, tribal wars\, and dashed hopes\, award–winning historian Eric Jay Dolin vividly reconstructs the Mentor’s doomed voyage\, the years of perilous captivity\, and the delicate negotiations and fraught naval rescue mission that followed. The Wreck of the Mentor is at once a powerful story of survival and a revealing window into the great Age of Sail―a time when maritime ambition collided with local sovereignty\, and when the outcome of one voyage rippled across oceans and empires. \n\n\n\nABOUT ERIC JAY DOLIN \n\n\n\nEric Jay Dolin is the author of seventeen books\, including Leviathan: The History of Whaling in America; A Furious Sky: The Five-Hundred-Year History of America’s Hurricanes and Rebels at Sea: Privateering in the American Revolution. His newest book coming out in June\, is The Wreck of the Mentor: A True Story of Death\, Despair\, and Deliverance in the Age of Sail. Dolin’s books have won many awards including the John Lyman Award for U.S. Maritime History; Fraunces Tavern Museum Book Award; and National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Excellence in American History Book Award for Adult Nonfiction among others. Many of his books have been chosen as “must reads” by the Massachusetts Center for the Book. Other honors include being chosen as a finalist for the Kirkus Prize\, and as one of the best books of the year by The Los Angeles Times\, The Boston Globe\, The Washington Post\, Kirkus Reviews\, the Library Journal\, and Booklist. Scott Fitzgerald issued his classic conclusion that ‘There are no second acts in American lives\,’ he failed to envision the career of legendary Texas troubadour Ray Wylie Hubbard. A willing conspirator in the late seventies Cosmic Cowboy revolt that ushered in the mythical Outlaw era\, Hubbard was a catalyst in the cultural upheaval that led to the peaceful coexistence of Lone Star music enthusiasts who comprised each end of the social and political spectrum of that troubled time. In the stellar company of iconic colleagues like Willie Nelson\, Waylon Jennings\, Doug Sahm and Jerry Jeff Walker\, Ray Wylie Hubbard was an architect of the musical legacy that continues to inspire subsequent generations of up-and-coming Texas talent. \n\n\n\nYes\, Hubbard is a Texas singer-songwriter\, complete with the classic trifurcated handle\, fundamental chapter of the canon in his song catalog (“Redneck Mother”)\, and enough wild hairs in his past to qualify him as a legend. But along the way\, his attention began to leave matters extraneous to his art and soul by the wayside and focus on the beauty and potential to be found in the blank canvas of\, in his case\, the yet to be written and recorded song. The result has been one of the most satisfying musical and lyrical journeys to witness over the last two decades. In the years that followed he evolved into a writer of uncommonly honest portraits of life\, alternately mixing deep personal sagas with poignant character studies of those traveling on the dark side of the road. \n\n\n\n If one wanted to describe the sound of Ray Wylie Hubbard\, one could call it American music\, born from the time honored traditions of folk\, country\, and roots rock.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\n\nVIEW CALENDAR\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDETAILS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSHOW @ 8:00 pm / DOORS @ 7:00 pm\n\n\n\nSEATED SHOW / 16+ (Under 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian)\n\n\n\nALL TICKET SALES ARE FINAL\n\n\n\nLimit of 4 tickets per purchaser\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented By: The Arts Campus At Willits

With roots in singer-songwriter\, indie-folk and a sound shaped by soaring harmonies and organic instrumentation\, LVDY crafts songs that feel like home. In unison it is almost unrecognizable who’s who\, and in harmony\, an effortless blend that welcomes the exhale. Their uplifting sound and intimate storytelling weave love anthems in and out of their messages\, with simple yet important reminders that we’re not alone. \n\n\n\nTheir ethereal harmonies\, musical warmth\, and meaningful lyrics find inspiration in the beauty of the outdoors and the threads that weave us together as humans. Born in New England\, based in Bozeman Montana\, singer\, songwriter\, and multi-instrumentalist Madeline Hawthorne pens the kind of tunes you listen to on a cross-country trek to start anew or in the dead of night when you just need a reminder that somebody’s listening. \n\n\n\nIn this respect\, her 2024 independent album\, Tales From Late Nights & Long Drives\, serves as a fitting soundtrack to life’s trip. \n\n\n\n“It’s the perfect road trip record\,” she affirms. “It was mostly written while I was on tour. If the songs were written at home in Montana\, I took inspiration from journal entries and memories of my travels. This is me stepping onto the stage with more miles under my boots. I’m giving into the moment and the melody to tell a story. It’s like eleven different versions of me—a woman I could have been\, a woman I perhaps thought I was\, and a woman I hope to be someday.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\n\nVIEW CALENDAR\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDETAILS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSHOW @ 8:00 pm / DOORS @ 7:00 pm\n\n\n\nSTANDING ROOM SHOW / 18+ VALID PHOTO ID REQUIRED\n\n\n\nALL TICKET SALES ARE FINAL\n\n\n\nLimit of 4 tickets per purchaser\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented By: The Arts Campus At Willits
