Dogs in a Pile\, an eclectic quintet\, has emerged as the heir apparent to the town’s rich musical legacy. Merging funk\, jazz\, and rock and roll with psychedelia\, the quintet presents a completely original vibe built on kaleidoscopic soundscapes eerily reminiscent of the days of yesteryear. \n\n\n\nThe Dogs employ a unified approach to performance and songwriting\, crafting aural mosaics through adept instrumentation and humble precocity. As avid storytellers\, they draw inspiration from personal experiences\, balancing life’s foibles with ever-present youthful sanguinity. \n\n\n\nDogs began when Philadelphia University of the Arts guitar gun-slinger Jimmy Law began playing with young Joe Babick (drums)\, a student at the Count Basie Theater program in Red Bank\, NJ.  Lightning struck when they were introduced to Berklee School of Music student and bass player Sam Lucid\, who immediately suggested fellow Berklee student and keyboard player Jeremy Kaplan. The addition of fellow Berklee student Brian Murray (guitar) in 2019 made for the quintessential final piece in the Dogs’ puzzle.  \n\n\n\nA string of successful local shows drove the development of a massive northeast fan base\, affectionately known as the Dog Pound. The band’s astronomical growth culminated in an epic\, sold-out performance at the legendary Stone Pony in Asbury Park during the summer of 2021. The Colorado-based performer\, a past Kerrville NewFolk Competition winner who also performed with the all-redhead roots band Gingerbomb\, had been working on the project for years\, but hit delays with illness and false starts. She really began to unlock new levels in her songwriting when she decided to stop dancing around what she really wanted to say. “I discovered that’s a side of myself I like as a songwriter.\,” she says. “It’s become a sensibility that I know how to rest in.” \n\n\n\nThe results were a long time coming\, but they’re worth the wait. With unfailing honesty and vulnerability\, Burtt—who self-produced the project—wrestles with weighty topics like the burden of her own aspirations (“Drugstore Brand”)\, generational trauma (“Little Girls”)\, and the end of an important relationship (“Unfinished Business\,” “Good for You”). She also does it while mixing in doses of groove and pop smarts that make the lyrics hit even harder. Ultimately\, even though she addresses thorny topics\, there’s a sense of hope on Witness. “These songs are more real because hidden in them is the belief that there’s a silver lining\,” Burtt says. “I’m not ignorant to the shitstorm you have to endure to get there. A trembling world awaits the results. \n\n\n\nTom’s career has taken him from his days as a drama student at The University of Oklahoma to thousands of concerts in a variety of venues––from coffee houses in Greenwich Village to The Albert Hall in London to Carnegie Hall in New York; from festivals in Hong Kong to Denmark\, from Tokyo to Oslo. \n\n\n\nHe has done over 50 concert tours of England\, Wales\, Scotland and Ireland and has recorded over 50 albums of his own songs. Recordings of his songs by other artists number in the hundreds and include artists such as Bob Dylan\, Johnny Cash\, Willie Nelson\, Dolly Parton\, Judy Collins\, John Denver\, Joan Baez and Peter\, Paul & Mary\, to name just a very few. \n\n\n\nHe began his performing career in Greenwich Village in 1960\, coming in on weekends from Fort Dix\, New Jersey\, where he was toiling away in the Clerk Typist School. (He used his typewriter one day to compose his famous song for children\, The Marvelous Toy\, later a hit for The Chad Mitchell Trio and Peter\, Paul & Mary). Upon his release he stayed in New York and put in several years playing in now-legendary coffee houses like The Gaslight and befriending other singers like Dave Van Ronk (The Mayor of Macdougal Street)\, Bob Dylan\, Phil Ochs and Eric Andersen. \n\n\n\nHis shows with The Don Juans have him on his toes\, he says; “These guys are long-ball hitters and if I don’t want to get smoked I’d better do a little rehearsing. The quintet brings together Melford (composer/piano)\, Ingrid Laubrock (tenor and soprano saxophones)\, Mary Halvorson (electric guitar) and Tomeka Reid (cello)\, and rising star Lesley Mok (drums). Their critically acclaimed debut\, inspired by a set of drawings by the visual artist Cy Twombly\, For the Love of Fire and Water was released in April 2022 on the RogueArt label. A second album\, Hear the Light Singing\, adding “insertions” to the original suite\, written with each player’s unique musical personality in mind\, was released in October 2023 to immense critical acclaim. In the last three years\, the band has toured from Pori to San Sebastien to Austin to San Francisco and everywhere in between. \n\n\n\nMyra Melford’s Fire and Water\n\n\n\nMyra Melford \n\n\n\nThe Bay Area pianist Myra Melford—hard-angled counterpoint\, potent grooves\, free exploration\, intuitive interplay\, chamber-music elements and much more. Born in 1957 and raised near Chicago\, Melford’s early tutelage included both classical training and the Windy City blues and boogie-woogie she absorbed through her first piano teacher\, Erwin Helfer.  \n\n\n\nShe became introduced to jazz during college\, in Olympia\, Washington\, and later studied under Art Lande and Gary Peacock in Seattle before heading east\, first to Boston and then to New York. Once immersed in the city that nurtured Cecil Taylor\, Ornette Coleman and her other avant-jazz beacons\, she began making her own vital contributions to the burgeoning Downtown scene. In these formative years she participated in a workshop with AACM hero Leroy Jenkins\, studied piano with Jaki Byard and Don Pullen\, took composition lessons from Henry Threadgill and began a decade-long tenure in ensembles led by “Conduction” innovator Butch Morris. \n\n\n\nSince debuting on record as a bandleader in 1990\, she’s accrued a discography containing more than 20 albums as a leader or co-leader and boasting collaborations with creative-music luminaries like Dave Douglas\, Ben Goldberg\, Chris Speed\, Erik Friedlander\, Cuong Vu and Marty Ehrlich. Her working groups have acted as both singular\, self-contained units and larger statements of her always developing ideas about composition and improvisation. In her early trio with Lindsey Horner and Reggie Nicholson\, Melford established a searching\, democratic take on trio language that expanded in later groups like Equal Interest\, with Jenkins and Joseph Jarman; Trio M\, featuring Matt Wilson and Mark Dresser; and the freely improvising. A similarly all-embracing mission\, based in writing that is at once intricate and receptive to the whims of the ensemble\, has defined her quintets and sextets\, including the Same River\, Twice\, Be Bread and now Snowy Egret. \n\n\n\nAlong the way\, Melford has received some of the most prestigious honors in contemporary music\, including numerous Down Beat poll placings\, a 2012 Alpert Award in the Arts for Music and\, in 2013\, a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award. That same year\, she earned a Doris Duke Residency to Build Demand for the Arts\, during which she facilitated forward-looking programming at San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. A 2000 Fulbright scholarship allowed Melford to study in North India for nine months\, a journey that informed the early music of Be Bread. In 2016\, Snowy Egret was named Midsize Ensemble of the Year in the Jazz Journalists Association’s annual Jazz Awards. whom the New Yorker called “a stalwart of the new-jazz movement”—has spent the last three decades making brilliant original music that is equally challenging and engaging. Over the years\, and inspired by extramusical sources like literature\, history and spirituality\, she’s explored an array of formats\, from ruminative solo-piano recitals to deeply interactive small groups\, ambitious multidisciplinary programs and even the swinging grandeur of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.  Her idiom-bending ingenuity—which has garnered Melford fans from the worlds of jazz\, contemporary classical and the avant-garde—has been a through line in her musical life. \n\n\n\nAn experienced educator as well\, Melford relocated to the Bay Area from New York in 2004 to join the music department at the University of California\, Berkeley. A Professor of Composition and Improvisational Practices for the Department of Music\, she continues to bring cutting-edge jazz and new music to the campus community via her teaching and as a guest curator for the Cal Performances organization. \n\n\n\nTomeka Reid \n\n\n\nDescribed as a “New Jazz Power Source” by the New York Times\, cellist and composer TOMEKA REID has emerged as one of the most original\, versatile\, and curious musicians in Chicago’s bustling jazz and improvised music community over the last decade. Her distinctive melodic sensibility\, always rooted in a strong sense of groove\, has been featured in many distinguished ensembles over the years. Reid released her debut recording as a bandleader in 2015\, with the Tomeka Reid Quartet\, a vibrant showcase for the cellist’s improvisational acumen as well as her dynamic arrangements and compositional ability. The quartet’s second album\, Old New\, released in Oct 2019 on Cuneiform Records\, has been described as “fresh and transformative—its songs striking out in bold\, lyrical directions with plenty of Reid’s singularly elegant yet energetic and sharp-edged bow work.” And\, most recently\, in April of 2024\, what has been considered Reid’s most adventurous Quartet recording to date is the highly acclaimed 3+3. \n\n\n\nA 2022 MacArthur Fellow and Herb Alpert Artist and 2021 USA Fellow\, Reid has received awards from the Foundation of the Arts (2019)\, 3Arts (2016) and received her doctorate in music from the University of Illinois\, Urbana-Champaign in 2017. Reid has been a key member of ensembles led by legendary reedists like Anthony Braxton\, Roscoe Mitchell\, as well as a younger generation of visionaries including flutist Nicole Mitchell\, vocalist Dee Alexander\, and drummer Mike Reed. \n\n\n\nIn 2013\, she launched the first Chicago Jazz String Summit\, a semi-annual three-day international festival of cutting edge string players held in Chicago. From 2019 to 2021\, Tomeka Reid received a teaching appointment at Mills College as the Darius Milhaud Chair in Composition. \n\n\n\nMary Halvorson \n\n\n\nGuitarist\, composer and MacArthur fellow MaryHalvorson has been described as “a singular talent” (Lloyd Sachs\, JazzTimes)\, ”NYC’s least-predictable improviser” (Howard Mandel\, City Arts)\, “one of the most original jazz guitarists of our time” (Peter Margasak\, Bandcamp Daily)\, and “one of today’s most formidable bandleaders” (Francis Davis\, Village Voice). In recent Downbeat Critics Polls she has been celebrated as guitarist\, rising star jazz artist\, and rising star composer of the year. Halvorson’s most recent release\, Cloudward (Nonesuch Records\, 2024)\, features her Amaryllis sextet\, with Adam O’Farrill (trumpet)\, Jacob Garchik (trombone)\, Patricia Brennan (vibraphone)\, Nick Dunston (bass) and Tomas Fujiwara (drums)\, along with special guest Laurie Anderson (violin) on one track. In a 9/10 review by PopMatters’ Chris Ingalls\, the album was described as “a shimmering\, deeply satisfying example of a jazz sextet firing on all cylinders. Prepare to be astonished.” Halvorson is also part of several collaborative projects\, most notably the longstanding trio Thumbscrew\, with Michael Formanek on bass and Tomas Fujiwara on drums. Over the past two decades she has worked with such diverse musicians as Tim Berne\, Anthony Braxton\, Taylor Ho Bynum\, John Dieterich\, Trevor Dunn\, Bill Frisell\, Ingrid Laubrock\, Myra Melford\, Jason Moran\, Joe Morris\, Tom Rainey\, Jessica Pavone\, Tomeka Reid\, Marc Ribot\, Ches Smith and John Zorn. \n\n\n\nLesley Mok \n\n\n\nLesley Mok is a New York City-based percussionist and interdisciplinary artist who works in sound\, installation\, film\, and theater. Interested in the ways social conditions shape our beings\, Lesley’s work focuses on overacting humanness to explore ideas about alienness and privilege. Their work draws from queer and feminist art practices\, Chinese philosophy\, and Afro-Cuban musical traditions.  \n\n\n\nTheir ongoing explorations with composition and improvisation are most notably documented in their debut album The Living Collection (American Dreams Records\, 2023) that features a ten-piece improvising chamber ensemble. The album was named International Debut Album of the Year at the 2024 Deutscher Jazz Preis. Other recent works include stilled leaf-chatter (2022)\, bird in its chest (2022)\, pooling light (2021)\, but I forced to mind my vision of a sky (2020)\, and (2020). \n\n\n\nLesley is a recipient of the 2022 Resident Artist at Roulette Intermedium\, 2021 Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award\, Hermitage Fellow\, 2021 Van Lier Artist at the Asian American Arts Alliance\, and a member of the inaugural cohort of Mutual Mentorship for Musicians. Their work has been commissioned and performed by International Contemporary Ensemble\, Metropolis Ensemble\, and JACK Quartet.  \n\n\n\nAs a percussionist\, Lesley has performed alongside Tomeka Reid\, William Parker\, Ingrid Laubrock\, Halvorson\, Kenny Barron\, John Patitucci\, Cory Smythe\, Jen Shyu\, Kalia Vandever\, Fay Victor\, Adam O’Farrill\, and others. \n\n\n\nIngrid Laubrock \n\n\n\nIngrid Laubrock is an experimental saxophonist and composer\, interested in  exploring the borders between musical realms and creating multi-layered\, dense and  often evocative sound worlds. A prolific composer\, Laubrock was named a “true  \n\n\n\nvisionary” by pianist and The Kennedy Center’s artistic director Jason Moran\, and a “fully committed saxophonist and visionary” by The New Yorker. Her composition Vogelfrei was nominated “one of the best 25 Classical tracks of 2018” by The New York Times.  \n\n\n\nLaubrock has performed with Anthony Braxton\, Muhal Richard Abrams\, Jason Moran\, Kris Davis\, Nels Cline\, Tyshawn Sorey\, Mary Halvorson\, Myra Melford\, Zeena Parkins\, Tom Rainey\, Tim Berne\, Dave Douglas\, Wet Ink and many others. Drawing on tonal influences from the American and global south\, Sollee’s vocals and unique cello style thread through each track binding seemingly disparate chapters of his journey – the Long Haul.  \n\n\n\nAfter his last album in 2017\, Sollee took a break from touring to grow his family and deepen community connections in Louisville\, KY. Now a father of three\, Sollee has leaned into his work as a composer; scoring films such as LAND from director Robin Wright\, and Maggie Morre(s)\, a John Slattery film featuring Tina Fey and Jon Hamm. He also scored the podcast series Unreformed\, which was recently nominated for a Peabody Award. Outside of music\, Sollee helped launch the non-profit Canopy\, which supports Kentucky businesses positively impacting their communities and planet. \n\n\n\nLike so many\, the COVID-19 pandemic years\, which Sollee refers to as “the great pause\,” brought loss and grief. The deaths of his mentor Jon Rieger\, his father Bob Sollee\, and his long-time musical partner Jordon Ellis presented him with opportunities for reflection and growth. This in turn\, gives the new record a sense of buoyancy\, a feeling of rising out of a depth\, seven years coming. \n\n\n\nThe title track “Long Haul” tells the story of Sollee’s nearly two year struggle with long-COVID. The lyrics paint in broad strokes and are relatable to anyone who’s been forced – for whatever reason – to shift their relationship to their body. He sings\, “I didn’t know how rich I was until this poverty\,” lilting up to a high note letting us know he’s embraced and grown from the experience. “I realized I had a very exploitative relationship with my body and my creativity\,” says Sollee. “I realized the most radical thing you can do is to care for yourself; not in some optimized\, individualistic way\, but as an aspect of nature and society” Serving as the album’s title\, “Long Haul” takes on a universal meaning as a journey that we’re all on together. \n\n\n\nWhile working on the record\, Sollee lived by the mantra\, “show our fingerprints\,” referencing the guidance of NY Times tech reporter Kevin Roose in his book Futureproof. In this age of automation and generative technologies\, Sollee chose to employ breathy woodwinds\, choirs\, tactile hand percussion\, and his signature cello style\, all of which shine through in the Dolby ATMOS Spatial Audio version of the album (a first for Sollee). Evoking the music of Paul Simon\, there is a forward momentum to the songs that creates a sense of journey. And this traveling groove comes through on key songs like “Misty Miles” and “Under the Spell”\, both of which explore the friction of being human in the rush of technology and consumerism. The refrain “When will enough be enough?” in Misty Miles is sung over the smooth\, rhythmic cadence of bicycling\, juxtaposing imagery of “crooked live oaks” with Charleston\, South Carolina’s more artificial landscapes. \n\n\n\nBoth of these songs give an honest description of how Sollee relates to his work\, accomplishments\, family and community. “I’m constantly trying to let go of all of these ambitions and desires… just be present with my family\, with nature…and to be present where I am in life.” \n\n\n\nWhile many of the songs on Long Haul ask questions\, the track “One More Day ” makes a plea. “It’s a love letter\,” Sollee explains “My greatest hope for this song is that it can be shared in times of crisis\, maybe when someone you know is toeing the line of that irreversible choice: ending their life.” In February of 2023\, Sollee lost his long-time musical brother and close friend Jordon Ellis to suicide. The two had recorded and toured together since 2009. The idea for “One More Day” came to Sollee as he walked through the Louisville airport for the first time without his travel companion. In his words\, “His spirit was everywhere. I realized\, no matter where I went\, the memory of him was going to be there… pretty much every airport and venue\, I’ve walked through and played with him.” The lyrics\, rich with descriptive imagery of their travels together\, ride the song’s distinct percussive groove\, “a strange groove” as Sollee describes it. It was inspired by free-range jams on and off stage with Ellis that explored Tejano\, Soca\, and Caribbean musical influences\, full of buoyancy and joy.  \n\n\n\nWithout Ellis as his percussive and collaborative keystone\, Sollee found himself creatively adrift while writing the record. But over time\, he viewed it as an opportunity for growth and to explore new collaborative relationships. This\, and Sollee’s desire to bring hand-percussion to the album led him to multi-instrumentalist\, Patrick Duke Graney. \n\n\n\nOther creatives featured on the album include Grammy nominated Jason Clayborn and the Atmosphere Changers\, Stuart Bogie who arranged and performed the winds and horns\, bassist Alana Rocklin\, of STS9\, long-time friend Dan Dorff on keys and drums\, and multi-instrumentalist Brandon Coleman. Kentucky-based artist Ceirra Evans painted the album cover. The image features a man sauntering along a winding path through Eyvind Earle-esque woods. Don’t miss it! \n\n\n\nABOUT Joe Hertler & The Rainbow Seekers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGenre – Funk \n\n\n\nJoe Hertler & The Rainbow Seekers will make a sprightly young groove doctor out of anyone. With spectacular energy pulsating from every member of the band\, the Rainbow Seekers could illuminate the very chambers of Heaven. Lead singer Joe Hertler splashes through lyrical puddles of golden rain\, leaving his audience wearing flowery crowns and bubbling smiles. A ride on the Rainbow will take you across the mountains of Motown\, through the fjords of folk\, over the archipelagos of Americana\, and-at last-into a funky firth\, where only the fiercest of friendships can be found. \n\n\n\nThe Rainbow Seekers began their historic quest 8 years ago\, revolving around the pure\, unadulterated songwriting of their fearless leader\, Joe Hertler. Ryan Hoger was the first among the Seekers to find this lonely songsmith and recognize the twinkling magic in his beard. The young boy gave up all his earthly possessions (besides his guitar\, of course) and became the first disciple of the Rainbow. With this\, the core of the Rainbow was thereby established\, and it didn’t take long for the Rainbow Seekers to continue their expansion. Multi-instrumentalist and notable auxiliary percussion maestro Micah Bracken journeyed from the bowels of Atlantis when he heard tell of the Rainbow\, and the earth trembled as saxophonist and all-around badass Aaron Stinson descended from Olympus on a golden rainbow of his own. Then came thunder from the depths of space and as it picked up the bass\, a soft exhale escaped the lips of every princess within a hundred moons\, “Bambis\,” they cooed. All the while\, on the other ends of the earth\, a young boy was hard at work\, honing and sharpening his sticks for the day that the Rainbow would come his way\, and when it landed at his door\, Ryan McMahon climbed aboard.  \n\n\n\nSince the early days\, their quest has brought them across the nation and upon such noble gatherings as Bonnaroo\, Electric Forest\, and Summer Camp. As you’ll know if you’ve seen the band\, seeking the proverbial Rainbow is all about the live performance. “The live show is the purpose of the band. This is why we make music. Playing music is a symbiotic process\, the crowd is as much a part of it as the musicians. We give as much energy and love as we can and we can feel that coming from the crowd as well” says Hertler. “We believe that performance is not a High Art operation\, and that you should do anything you can to ensure that the crowd is having a good time. But nothing could be further from the truth. Hailing from Utrecht\, The Netherlands\, the blue-eyed indie folk sensation has been known for an eclectic sound. Her music lands somewhere in the realm of ‘60’s girl group meets indie/garage rock\, never losing the intimacy of a singer-songwriter. Whether she’s grooving with her band in a dark bar in Los Angeles\, or in a quiet theater with nothing but a guitar\, she’s certain to draw you in with her whimsical tunes\, magnetic stage presence & painfully relatable lyrics. \n\n\n\nAs a kid\, she spent every night of the week watching classic American movies with her dad. He layers Roland 808s against avant-garde drumming in the vein of his mentors Elvin Jones and Billy Hart\, the latter of whom he studied with at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Virtuoso musos appear alongside rap poets\, including Danny Brown\, Wiki\, Lil B\, and Shabazz Palaces. Top-flight jazz improvisation weaves in and out of orchestral string arrangements by Jherek Bischoff. The album’s diverse\, all-star roster of collaborators includes several of his close friends\, like vocalists Nick Hakim\, Laura Mvula\, Francis and the Lights\, and jazz stars like Theo Croker and Vijay Iyer.  \n\n\n\nANIMALS pushes Kassa’s message further too\, the title a loaded metaphor for the paradoxes of his life as an entertainer and as a black man in America. The son of a Tulane University professor\, he was taught the rudiments of instrumentation by his uncle on his mother’s ukulele. “Uncle Howard\,” Smither says\, “showed me that if you knew three chords\, you could play a lot of the songs you heard on the radio. And if you knew four chords\, you could pretty much rule the world.” With that bit of knowledge under his belt\, he was hooked. “I’d loved acoustic music – specifically the blues – ever since I first heard Lightnin’ Hopkins’ Blues In My Bottle album. I couldn’t believe the sound Hopkins got. At first I thought it was two guys playing guitar. My style\, to a degree\, came out of trying to imitate that sound I heard.” \n\n\n\nIn his early twenties\, Smither turned his back on his anthropology studies and headed to Boston at the urging of legendary folk singer Eric von Schmidt. It was the mid-’60s and acoustic music thrived in the streets and coffeehouses there. Smither forged lifelong friendships with many musicians\, including Bonnie Raitt who went on to record his songs\, “Love You Like A Man” and “I Feel the Same. (Their friendship has endured as their career paths intertwined over the years.) What quickly evolved from his New Orleans and Cambridge musical experiences is his enduring\, singular guitar sound – a beat-driven finger-picking\, strongly influenced by the playing of Mississippi John Hurt and Lightnin’ Hopkins\, layered over the ever-present backbeat of his rhythmic\, tapping feet (always mic’d in performance). \n\n\n\nThe sound and imagery of the 20th release by Chris Smither\, All About the Bones\, (release date: May 3\, 2024 on Signature Sounds/Mighty Albert\, distributed by Redeye) is as elemental as the inky black shadows cast by a shockingly bright moon. And in that time Los Lobos have created an unprecedented body of work\, a legacy of greatness.
