With Quincy’s energy and experience\, you’ll find your unique style and learn to express yourself like never before. \n\n\n\nWe’ll wrap up the 6 weeks with a dance off\, where you’ll get to show off everything you’ve learned\, throw down your best moves\, and vibe with your crew.  \n\n\n\nJohier Begay – Breaking Instructor \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJohier Begay is of Navajo ancestry and originally from the Four Corners but has been living in the valley for years now. He first started breaking in 8th grade and was all self-taught for the first two years before having a chance to dance and train with other b-boys for the first time. Breaking kept him out of trouble and in love with the constant effort to be better than he was yesterday. With little to no hip-hop scene in the valley\, he was driven by his own love for breaking and hip-hop to keep practicing by himself before connecting with Dance Initiative in 2021. He has had the opportunity to teach over 1\,700 students in the Roaring Fork Valley about hip-hop and breaking. \n\n\n\n\n\nQuincy Gray – Hip Hop Instructor \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nQuincy Gray\, a native Angeleno\, is a passionate educator\, performing artist\, and entertainment professional\, excited to bring his love for urban dance to TACAW this spring. With a career spanning performance\, choreography\, and artistic direction for musicians and live events\, Quincy has had the honor of collaborating with talented individuals across various industries. He honed his craft at the California Institute of the Arts and Millennium Dance Complex in Los Angeles\, further expanding his skills with Meisner acting technique and youth theater direction at Thunder River Theater. Quincy has also taught hip-hop at The Launchpad in Carbondale and Aspen Shakti.His signature class\, IAM FREEstyl\, channels the energy of hip-hop culture through movement\, street funk\, and a mix of musical genres. Quincy views dance as a deeply spiritual and healing form of storytelling\, helping individuals express emotions and improve physical and emotional well-being. His classes focus on self-expression\, incorporating freestyle dance as a key element. Quincy invites participants to discover their unique style\, joy\, and the transformative power of dance. Now\, it’s turning to the next chapter under new ownership. Anjanette Garcia\, community engagement manager of Aspen Valley Land Trust\, explains why the conservation nonprofit bought the property in 2023 and what their vision is for the future.  \n\n\n\n2:00 p.m.: From Strava Clubs to Secret Trails: Tech and Ethics in the Outdoors \n\n\n\nGPS apps like Strava\, OnX and AllTrails are ubiquitous in the outdoors community\, both a form of social media and a resource for backcountry access. How can we use these apps as a tool for connection — and what does it mean to use them responsibly?  \n\n\n\nFeaturing Quinton Gonzalez\, trail crew manager for the Roaring Fork Mountain Bike Association; Simi Hamilton\, endurance athlete and Aspen Expeditions guide; and Zoë Rom\, long distance trail runner and journalist\, moderated by freelance journalist Kaya Williams.  \n\n\n\n3:15 p.m.: Out of Service\, Still InReach: Satellite “SOS” Signals and Emergency Rescues \n\n\n\nDeep in the backcountry\, and far away from cell service\, satellite communication devices let users call for help with an emergency “SOS” signal. Greg Shaffran\, vice president of Mountain Rescue Aspen\, explains what happens next — whether the signal has been activated on purpose or on accident.  \n\n\n\n4:00 p.m.: The Impact of Adventure: A Crash Course in Recreation Ecology \n\n\n\nOutdoor recreation is a gateway to the natural world — but it can also have lasting impacts on wildlife\, vegetation and soils. She is known for her use of technology – which she uses to record and sample her cello onstage and in the studio – and for her DIY approach – composing\, recording and producing her works without the help of a record label. \n\n\n\nBorn in Canada\, Keating started playing the cello when she was eight and went on to pursue electronic music and contemporary composition as part of her Liberal Arts studies at Sarah Lawrence College. After graduation she moved to San Francisco and built a career as an information architect and data analyst while moonlighting as a cellist in rock bands. Keating eventually combined her love of music and technology\, using a computer to live-layer her cello and performing for late-night parties in the San Francisco warehouse in which she lived. \n\n\n\nKeating’s recorded works have achieved a surprising degree of popular ubiquity for a DIY artist. Her self-produced albums have several times reached #1 on the iTunes classical charts and spent many months on the Billboard classical charts. Her recordings are used as bumper music for NPR’s Morning Edition\, as the theme music to OnBeing\, as the thinking- music of the Sherlock Holmes character on CBS Elementary\, in HBO’s hit drama White Lotus\, in countless documentaries and in tens of thousands of online videos of everything from professional and amateur dance performances to rock climbing and gaming videos. \n\n\n\nKeating also composes for TV\, theater\, film and dance. She co-composed\, along with Jeff Russo\, the score for the HBO movie “Oslo”\, which earned them an Emmy Nomination in 2021 for Outstanding Music for a Television Movie. Her latest projects include scores for PBS’s 2022 series “Searching: Our Quest for Meaning in the Age of Science” and the drama “For The Love of a Woman”\, by Italian director Guido Chiesa\, scheduled for release in 2024. \n\n\n\nIn addition to her recordings\, Keating performs to rapt audiences around the world. Each performance is unique as she spontaneously improvises around her pieces\, demonstrates how she makes them and tells the stories behind them. \n\n\n\nA vocal advocate for the rights of artists and creators\, Keating writes and speaks often about copyright and the mechanics of the music industry economy. She was elected a governor of the San Francisco chapter of the Recording Academy\, named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum and served as a boardmember of CASH Music\, a nonprofit organization that built open source digital tools for musicians and labels. \n\n\n\nAs a cellist Zoë has played with a wide range of artists\, including Imogen Heap\, Amanda Palmer\, Guy Sigsworth\, Tears for Fears\, DJ Shadow\, Dan Hicks\, Thomas Dolby\, Sean Ono Lennon\, John Vanderslice\, Rasputina\, Pomplamoose and Paolo Nutini. \n\n\n\nZoë currently lives in Burlington\, VT and is working on another album for release in 2024. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLocal 7th through 12th graders enrolled in TACAW’s Youth Art Pass program are eligible to receive two (2) free admission tickets: one (1) for them and one (1) for a guest. In a dozen albums spanning three decades of recording\, the Denver-born songwriter/guitarist/singer has tackled such topics as the death penalty\, anorexia nervosa\, shoplifting\, reproduction\, the French Resistance\, adolescent malaise\, LGBTQ issues\, and the Christian Right. Her hits include “I Kissed A Girl”—the first openly gay-themed song ever to crack the Billboard Top 20—and the alt-rock anthem “Supermodel” featured in the film “Clueless”. Sobule was one half of The Jill & Julia Show\, providing music while actor Julia Sweeney contributes storytelling. Jill is considered a pioneer in crowdfunding and is constantly exploring and creating new models for artists in an ever-changing music industry. Her latest record is “Nostalgia Kills”\, produced by Ben Lee and released on her own Pinko Records label. Jill’s theater credits include a musical adaptation of the Broadway classic “Yentl”\, “Prozak and the Platypus”\, and “Times Square”. Her latest\, “F*ck 7th Grade”\, was postponed due to Covid\, but was performed and filmed for three days at a make-shift drive-in over the Summer. The musical is a finalist for the Lambda Literary awards in LGBTQ Drama category this June. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT TODDY WALTERS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nToddy Walters is a multi-faceted artist who has performed in theater\, film\, television\, and commercials both as an actor and a recording/touring vocalist. She has recorded albums of original material and collaborated with producers and songwriters for film and music projects. Toddy began as a voice-over artist in the first 2 seasons of South Park and the South Park feature film\, ‘Bigger\, Longer and Uncut.’ She lent her vocals to the score of John Carpenter’s ‘The Ward’ but was left on the editing room floor of Terrence Malick’s The Thin Red Line. Toddy created\, managed and led an Amy Winehouse Tribute theater piece with a full band from 2015-2018 in Denver called Winehouse to solid acclaim. In 2017\, she played Heroin Jones in the feature film ‘Stadium Anthems’ available on Amazon Prime\, providing vocals and songwriting for the soundtrack. This season’s program seamlessly blends a diverse array of musical styles\, culminating in the highly anticipated world premiere of Snow Prayer\, a newly commissioned work by local composer and pianist\, Kevin Kaukl. \n\n\n\nHCS continues its commitment to accessible\, high-quality performances by offering free concerts with a suggested donation of $20 per person\, ensuring that the joy of live music remains available to all. \n\n\n\nThe concert program journeys through a diverse array of musical styles\, beginning with Gerald Finzi’s Prelude\, a lyrical and introspective work that sets a contemplative tone. George Gershwin’s Lullaby follows\, wrapping audiences in its tender\, jazz-inflected harmonies. Gabriel Fauré’s Après Un Rêve evokes a dreamlike world of longing and nostalgia\, while Astor Piazzolla’s Oblivion and Chau Paris infuse the program with the passion of tango. Gustav Holst’s Brook Green Suite\, a lively and folk-inspired work\, provides a bright and spirited finale before the unveiling of Kevin Kaukl’s Snow Prayer. \n\n\n\nThe world premiere of Snow Prayer\, commissioned via funds from the City of Aspen Cultural Vibrancy Fellowship program\, is a highlight of the season. Snow Prayer began as a meditation on the critical role that winter snow plays in our mountain ecology\, our local economy\, and our cultural identity as a city. We’ve all seen the bumper stickers that say “PRAY FOR SNOW.” Inspired by that sentiment\, Snow Prayer is a musical illustration of our collective yearning for a healthy snowpack in our mountains. It is meant to capture the excitement\, beauty\, and grandeur of an epic powder day. Kaukl said that the Cultural Vibrancy Fellowship allowed him to study orchestration techniques\, acquire software tools\, and connect with other Fellows who work in a diverse range of media was a huge inspiration.  \n\n\n\nABOUT HIGH COUNTRY SINFONIA \n\n\n\nFounded in 2015\, High Country Sinfonia is a musician-led chamber orchestra dedicated to providing exceptional performances to the Roaring Fork Valley. After that\, he had the chance to study and perform across the U.S. and internationally\, earning his Master of Music and Artist Diploma degrees from the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin and Shenandoah Conservatory in Virginia. He was a student of the Irish pianist John O’Conor throughout his graduate studies.  \n\n\n\nAspen’s vibrant community and beautiful mountain surroundings made a lasting impression on Kaukl and left him longing to return. After graduate school\, he moved to the Roaring Fork Valley and was appointed to his present position as organist and music director at St. Mary Catholic Church in 2016. He first started breaking in 8th grade and was all self-taught for the first two years before having a chance to dance and train with other b-boys for the first time. Breaking kept him out of trouble and in love with the constant effort to be better than he was yesterday. With little to no hip-hop scene in the valley\, he was driven by his own love for breaking and hip-hop to keep practicing by himself before connecting with Dance Initiative in 2021. He has had the opportunity to teach over 1\,700 students in the Roaring Fork Valley about hip-hop and breaking. \n\n\n\n\n\nQuincy Gray – Hip Hop Instructor \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nQuincy Gray\, a native Angeleno\, is a passionate educator\, performing artist\, and entertainment professional\, excited to bring his love for urban dance to TACAW this spring. With a career spanning performance\, choreography\, and artistic direction for musicians and live events\, Quincy has had the honor of collaborating with talented individuals across various industries. He honed his craft at the California Institute of the Arts and Millennium Dance Complex in Los Angeles\, further expanding his skills with Meisner acting technique and youth theater direction at Thunder River Theater. Quincy has also taught hip-hop at The Launchpad in Carbondale and Aspen Shakti.His signature class\, IAM FREEstyl\, channels the energy of hip-hop culture through movement\, street funk\, and a mix of musical genres. Quincy views dance as a deeply spiritual and healing form of storytelling\, helping individuals express emotions and improve physical and emotional well-being. Breaking kept him out of trouble and in love with the constant effort to be better than he was yesterday. With little to no hip-hop scene in the valley\, he was driven by his own love for breaking and hip-hop to keep practicing by himself before connecting with Dance Initiative in 2021. He has had the opportunity to teach over 1\,700 students in the Roaring Fork Valley about hip-hop and breaking. \n\n\n\n\n\nQuincy Gray – Hip Hop Instructor \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nQuincy Gray\, a native Angeleno\, is a passionate educator\, performing artist\, and entertainment professional\, excited to bring his love for urban dance to TACAW this spring. Released by Nils Frahm’s label\, LEITER\, on vinyl and via all digital platforms\, it follows her appearance at SAULT’s 2023 live debut in London where\, The Guardian wrote\, her “voice had a delicate emotive heft that could turn stoics into sobbing wrecks”. Her first single for the label\, ‘draw something beautiful’\, appeared earlier this year in July. \n\n\n\nDaughter of a Temple was recorded over a week in 2022 at the Moore’s Opera House in Houston\, Texas\, after GANAVYA had reached out to friends and associates over the preceding months to join her for “a gathering in and for devotion”. This was to draw on studies of what she terms the musico- philosophies of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda\, and she’d even promised herself she’d invite anyone who brought up Turiyasangitananda’s name around her. “You really shouldn’t do that\,” she chuckles. “It turns out a lot of people talk about her!”” \n\n\n\nConsequently\, the album – which also brings the Hindu tradition of harikatha into the 21st century – draws upon a vast cast of contributors across multiple disciplines\, among them esperanza spalding\, Vijay Iyer\, Shabaka Hutchings\, Immanuel Wilkins\, Peter Sellars\, Rajna Swaminathan\, Charlotte Braithwaite\, Chris Sholar\, Darian Donovan Thomas\, and Bindhumalini Narayanswamy. Her mother even helped cook for participants. Iyer’s piano\, quickly accompanied by Wilkins’ saxophone\, then guides us through ‘Om Supreme’s uplifting ten minutes\, while Elders Wayne and Carolina Shorter’s prayer (recorded at their home) lends ‘Elders Wayne and Carolina’ its name while reminding us they are always with us. ‘Journey In Satchitananda / Ghana Nila’ – edited from a 45-minute rendition performed by over thirty musicians\, with dancers audible in the background – expands upon the bass line from one of Turiyasangitananda’s most recognisable prayers\, and ‘Om Navah Sivaya’\, the first song GANAVYA ever performed publicly\, opens with Charles Overton on harp and features her nephew Krsna on guitar\, as well as\, arguably most importantly\, her father and mother\, among others\, on guest vocals. \n\n\n\nThough it was the first thing recorded\, the album concludes with ‘A Love Supreme Parts 1-4’\, Daughter of a Temple’s beating heart. “The first part is me playing the kalimba as an ode to Wadada Leo Smith’s 1995 ‘Love Supreme’\,” GANAVYA explains. “The second is an ode to Peter Sellars\, who’s reading for us from the seventh chapter of the Vimalakirti Sutra\, ‘The Goddess’\, on the nature of love. Then the third is open – we dedicate that to Alice – and the fourth is IONE\, (American composer) Pauline Oliveros’ wife\, reading a poem she had written for us.” \n\n\n\nOf course\, if you ask GANAVYA – raised in India’s southernmost state and withdrawn from school at a young age to study music with her family – what first inspired her to make this remarkable record\, her answer is typically honest. “Loneliness\,” she replies\, before gently\, thoughtfully elaborating. “You were raised in a village\, then one day you wake up and you’re a graduate student at Harvard. The life you live doesn’t make sense to people back home anymore\, and what you’re seeking is that sense of village\, so you invite as many people as possible.” \n\n\n\nThat said\, building a village\, even a temporary shelter\, requires cash. “I thought I’d call ten people and maybe five would say yes\,” GANAVYA recalls softly\, “but all ten said yes\, then another forty said yes\, and before we knew it\, it was ‘Where is someone like me going to get the money to do something like this?’ And it doesn’t really make sense that a graduate student was able to afford this\, but every step of the way there was a grace much larger than me.” \n\n\n\nThus\, as is often the way with GANAVYA\, things worked out miraculously. She is\, after all\, a woman whose path has led from a childhood spent dancing and singing on the pilgrimage trail to earning four degrees – including at Berklee College of Music\, UCLA and Harvard\, to whom she was recommended by Quincy Jones – and on to 2024’s ‘like the sky I’ve been too quiet’\, her most recent album. Featuring contributions from Floating Points\, Tom Herbert\, Carlos Niño and Leafcutter John\, it was recorded with Shabaka Hutchings and released on his Native Rebel label. \n\n\n\nSo\, yes… it may have been chance that won the grant which helped establishDaughter of a Temple\, and perhaps it was luck the opera house was available\, and maybe a landlord would have offered six beautiful houses in a single street to anyone who asked\, and it could even be that a temple sharing the name of an Alice Coltrane track regularly handed out $10\,000 to pay for strangers’ flights. And sure\, coincidence might have ensured cousins from India she hadn’t seen in years would be performing at New York’s Metropolitan Museum around the time\, and that Vijay Iyer\, whose father had visited her in dreams\, would be in Houston anyway\, and that Berklee’s Ryan Renteria was available to record the proceedings. But\, then again… Really? \n\n\n\nKeen to emphasise the manner in which rituality resides in spirituality\, GANAVYA began the first day by presenting everyone with customized prayer beads\, then washed their feet with honey\, turmeric and warm water before they improvised around Coltrane’s ‘A Love Supreme’. “After that\,” she recalls\, “people started realising that they knew each other.” What followed was an extraordinary experience in pursuit of a common goal\, a coming together of people\, beliefs and musical styles as much as a mysterious\, unfathomable coming home. “We were moving with the contour of a village\, deciding in real time to make music which sometimes involved forty people singing\, then suddenly the entire group was doing a version of The Rite Of Spring and dancing.” \n\n\n\nAnd this magic isn’t restricted to participants. Daughter of a Temple’s purpose\, GANAVYA will tell you\, is that people “know there’s a village for you\, always in the ether. The worlds we dream of are possible when we come at it with the right amount of discipline and devotion. I hope that’s what resonates with them\, that it tells the story of this random girl who dreamed of this world and then it manifested itself. I hope it makes them feel less alone\, because that’s what it did for me. Artists and their songs include Johnny Nitro (One More Night\, on which Castro plays his treasured 1966 black Fender Stratocaster\, a guitar once owned by Nitro himself)\, Magic Slim (Hole In The Wall)\, Ron Thompson (Freight Train)\, Mike Duke (Keep Your Dog Inside) and Chris Cain (Woke Up And Smelled The Coffee). Castro additionally chose obscure songs by Wynonie Harris (Bloodshot Eyes)\, Eddie Taylor (Stroll Out West)\, Jimmy Nolen (The Way You Do) and Johnny “Guitar” Watson (She Moves Me). According to Castro\, “These are not the obvious artists people generally cover\, and that was most definitely on purpose.” \n\n\n\nCloser To The Bone was produced by master guitarist and studio wizard Christoffer “Kid” Andersen (producer of over 100 albums)\, at his now-famous Greaseland Studio in San Jose\, California. Closer To The Bone finds Castro at the top of his game\, bringing his seemingly limitless energy and boundless talent to the studio. Guests on the album include labelmates Andersen\, Rick Estrin\, Chris Cain and Billy Branch\, along with saxophone player/vocalist Deanna Bogart\, keyboard wizard Jim Pugh and\, on three songs\, the voices of The Sons Of The Soul Revivers. \n\n\n\nBorn in San Jose\, California in 1955\, Tommy Castro first picked up a guitar at age 10. He fell under the spell of six-string stars like Elvin Bishop\, Taj Mahal and Mike Bloomfield. Almost every major rock and soul act\, from Ike and Tina Turner to Janis Joplin to Tower Of Power\, toured through the area\, and Castro was at every show. He saw John Lee Hooker\, Albert King\, and Buddy Guy and Junior Wells at a local club\, JJ’s Blues Bar. Castro often jammed at JJ’s\, dreaming of busting out and making a name for himself. He created his own personal sound and style by mixing the blues\, R&B and funk music he loved into his own\, instantly recognizable brand of uplifting\, soul-healing music. \n\n\n\nAs his reputation spread\, Tommy played in several Bay Area bands\, quickly making a name for himself as a hotter-than-hot live artist bursting at the seams with talent. In 1985\, he became lead singer and guitarist for the regionally popular blues band NiteCry before joined popular Warner Brothers’ artists The Dynatones\, gigging all over the country. He formed the first Tommy Castro Band in 1992 and has not stopped touring since. In 1995\, soon after releasing their first album on Blind Pig Records\, The Tommy Castro Band were selected as the house band for three seasons on NBC Television’s Comedy Showcase (airing right after Saturday Night Live). The show brought Tommy in front of millions of viewers every week and cemented his reputation as a not-to-be-missed live performer.  \n\n\n\nAfter a series of successful releases on the Blind Pig\, Telarc and 33rd Street labels\, Tommy Castro joined Alligator Records in 2009. His label debut\, Hard Believer\, launched to massive popular and critical acclaim. 2011 saw the release of the raucous Tommy Castro Presents The Legendary Rhythm & Blues Revue—Live!. In 2014\, Castro & The Painkillers released The Devil You Know\, followed by Method To My Madness in 2015\, Stompin’ Ground in 2017\, and the irresistible Killin’ It—Live in 2019. With 2021’s A Bluesman Came To Town\, Castro told the story of a young musician’s journey through the blues world. AllMusic said the album was “a towering achievement.” \n\n\n\nCastro received his fourth prestigious and coveted Blues Music Award for B.B. King Entertainer Of The Year in 2023.
