SUMMARY:First Draft: A Dialogue On Writing W/ Devon O'Neil
DESCRIPTION:First Draft: A Dialogue on Writing\n\n\n\nW/ Devon O’Neill \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent @ 6:30 pm / DOORS @ 5:30 pm \n\n\n\nFREE W/ RSVP \n\n\n\nSEATED SHOW / ALL AGES (Under 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent @ 6:30 pm / Doors @ 5:30 pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT FIRST DRAFT: A DIALOGUE ON WRITING\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGenre: PANEL \n\n\n\nFirst Draft: A Dialogue on Writing is a literary podcast produced and hosted by Mitzi Rapkin. Each week the podcast features an in-depth interview with a fiction\, non-fiction\, essay\, or poetry writer. The show is equal parts investigation into the craft of writing and conversation about the topics of an author’s work. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE WAY OUT \n\n\n\nIn The Way Out: A True Story of Survival in the Heart of the Rockies tells a harrowing true story\, capturing a tale of survival\, tragedy\, and resilience in the Colorado backcountry. In January 2017 three fathers and four teenage children set off on what was meant to be a memorable bonding trip in the rugged wilderness outside Salida\, Colorado. During the trip\, fifteen-year-old Cole Walters-Schaler and Brett Beasley\, a legendary Forest Service ranger\, embarked on what should have been a brief ski into the alpine backcountry. Within hours\, an unpredictable blizzard transformed their adventure into a thirty-hour ordeal that left the entire community reeling. Through exclusive first hand interviews and a painstakingly researched\, vivid reconstruction of events\, O’Neil chronicles the life-or-death struggle of Cole and Brett while dissecting the emotional wreckage left behind. He also probes deeper questions: what drives outdoorsmen and women to seek out adventure despite the risk? When tragedy strikes\, how does a community support the survivors? And most importantly\, how do those touched by loss begin to find healing and forgiveness in the face of the unthinkable? The Way Out is a testament to our enduring fascination with the outdoors and a sobering reminder of its unforgiving power by examining the emotional and ethical questions raised by lives lived on the edge. O’Neil’s exploration of trauma\, community\, and the allure of the mountains makes for a profoundly moving and unforgettable read. \n\n\n\nABOUT DEVON O’NEIL \n\n\n\nDevon O’Neil is a journalist based in Breckenridge\, Colorado. O’Neil got his start as a daily newspaperman and later worked as a staff writer at ESPN.com and as a correspondent for Outside magazine. His stories have been recognized in the Best American Travel Writing and Best American Sports Writing anthologies and have twice been finalists for national awards in civic journalism. Raised on St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands\, he studied psychology at Middlebury College and often writes about the effects of psychological trauma on adventurers. In the winter\, he helps maintain a network of backcountry ski cabins above 11\,000 feet. \n\n\n\nLearn more about Devon O’Neil: WEBSITE \n\n\n\nABOUT MITZI RAPKIN \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMitzi Rapkin is the founder\, host and producer of the literary podcast\, “First Draft: A Dialogue on Writing\,” which features a new author interview each week. She has interviewed more than 500 contemporary writers of fiction\, nonfiction\, essays\, and poetry over the past eleven years. Her conversations explore essential questions about what it means to be human alongside the craft of writing and the themes of the writers’ works. Rapkin is also a journalist\, fiction writer\, certified integral coach\, facilitator\, and fiction-writing instructor.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn more about / Listen to First Draft: WEBSITE \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP\n\n\n\nVIEW CALENDAR\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDETAILS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEVENT @ 6:30 pm / DOORS @ 5:30 pm\n\n\n\nSEATED SHOW / ALL AGES (Under 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian)\n\n\n\nLimit of 4 tickets per purchaser\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented By: The Arts Campus At Willits

This conversation will explore the film’s themes through a local lens\, with insights from a representative of a nonprofit organization\, a philanthropist\, and the Chief Impact Officer of the Aspen Community Foundation. Together\, they’ll explore how to rethink charitable giving\, challenge perceptions\, and strengthen community impact. \n\n\n\nABOUT UNCHARITABLE \n\n\n\nWhat if charity could be transformed from a gesture to an answer— to solving the world’s greatest problems? What if everything we’ve been taught about charitable giving is wrong? What if it’s undermining the very causes\, we love the most? “Uncharitable” is a one-of-a-kind movie that shows how our charitable traditions and prejudices have suffocated the charitable sector and prevented it from leading the charge to truly change the world. Based on the book\, “Uncharitable\,” by Dan Pallotta\, which became one of the most talked-about TED talks of all time—changing everything from charity watchdog standards to the giving practices of America’s biggest foundations — Uncharitable follows the stories of four iconic American charitable efforts that were crippled or destroyed by old ideas. Step-by-step\, and with a chorus of leading voices in the field\, the movie shows how charity’s real power has been misunderstood and undermined by anachronistic ideas about frugality and deprivation and takes the viewer on a journey from sach-cloth and ashes to a place where unleashed\, charities can play the leading role in creating an unimaginably beautiful world that works for everyone. No topic is more crucial or timelier as we confront a world with increasingly complex problems\, with the least of us left behind\, and with the growing revelation that we are all interconnected and that our fate lies in our willingness to turn away from old ideas that have not worked and embraced radically new ones that can. \n\n\n\nPANELISTS \n\n\n\n\nLindsay Lofaro- Executive Director\, Buddy Program\n\n\n\nValerie Carlin- Chief Impact Officer\, Aspen Community Foundation\n\n\n\nMadeline Tomseth-  Strategic Impact Partner at Niveau Philanthropy\n\n\n\nModerator- Mitzi Rapkin\, Founder and Host of the literary podcast “First Draft”\n\n\n\n\nABOUT ASPEN COMMUNITY FOUNDATION \n\n\n\nSince 1980\, Aspen Community Foundation has been investing in a future where everyone from Aspen to Parachute has equitable opportunities to thrive. \n\n\n\nLearn more about Aspen Community Foundation: WEBSITE \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\n\nVIEW CALENDAR\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDETAILS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFILM @ 6:30 pm / DOORS @ 5:30 pm\n\n\n\nSEATED SHOW / ALL AGES (18 and under must be accompanied by a legal guardian)\n\n\n\nALL TICKET SALES ARE FINAL\n\n\n\nLimit of 4 tickets per purchaser\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented By: The Arts Campus At Willits

Audiences of all ages instantly fell in love and soon JMF was playing to packed rooms from legendary stages throughout California\, Oregon\, Arizona\, Colorado\, and Washington — dazzling new fans on the scene and pulling even the most discerning Jerry fanatics out of their seats for the first time in decades. \n\n\n\nThe magic all starts with lead vocalist and guitarist Garrett Deloian. As a seasoned veteran of the blues circuit\, he channels his lifelong love for the work of Garcia into every lick with his unparalleled mastery and tone. Drummer/founder Rodney Newman\, a student of The Dead/JGB since his youth\, leads the band’s reliable and relentless rhythm section. Rodney’s kick shares the bottom end with the steady and inspired bass playing of the multi-talented Son Vo. Rounding things out are two powerhouse vocalists\, Halina Janusz and Lisa Malsberger\, and veteran pianist and organ champion Jon Gold. \n\n\n\nThe future looks bright for JMF as they get ready to take their heartfelt magical dance parties to further points across the country. So whether you saw Jerry 500 times or were born after his time on earth\, this much is true: JMF will make you feel like he’s still here. \n\n\n\nGarrett Deloian – lead guitar and vocals \n\n\n\nHalina Janusz – vocals \n\n\n\nLisa Malsberger – vocals \n\n\n\nJon Gold – keys and organ \n\n\n\nSon Vo – bass guitar \n\n\n\nRodney Newman – drum kit \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\n\nVIEW CALENDAR\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDETAILS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSHOW @ 8:00 pm / DOORS @ 7:00 pm\n\n\n\nSTANDING ROOM SHOW / 21+ Valid Photo ID Required\n\n\n\nALL TICKET SALES ARE FINAL\n\n\n\nLimit of 4 tickets per purchaser\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented By: The Arts Campus At Willits

We absolutely\, unequivocally\, include Hanukkah\, Kwanzaa\, Yule\, Solstice celebrations both secular and mystical\, Festivus (for the rest of us)\, Saturnalia (in case you’re still Roman)\, and whatever half-remembered family traditions involve lutefisk\, fruitcake\, or interpretive dance around a pine-scented candle. To be perfectly honest\, we are not particularly invested in theological squabbles so much as in phonetic pleasure and shared reverence. Because the truth is this: beneath the lights and the consumerist hysteria and the hand-me-down rituals\, there is one thing\, one transcendent\, almost sacred figure\, that unites us. Dolph Lundgren. Human traditions wax and wane. Tomorrow there will be new gods\, and our gods will be forgotten\, washed away in the sands of time like Ozymandias. And yet\, improbably\, Dolph remains: our one Swedish lord and savior\, standing tall in a filmography that resists both taste and temporality. Theologians may quarrel\, cultures may clash\, but none can erase the enduring\, granite-chiseled truth of Storm Catcher (1999) or the utterly confounding but undeniably real Puncture Wounds (2014)\, a film in which Dolph portrays an Aryan Brotherhood enforcer and which grossed a staggering (if cosmically modest) $167\,832 domestically. Art and divinity cannot be measured in capital\, and we invite all to join us in our winter worship of Sweden’s third most famous actor\, behind all of the Skarsgårds and also probably Ingrid Bergman.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDETAILS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSHOW @ 8:00 pm / DOORS @ 7:30 pm\n\n\n\nSEATED SHOW / 18+ Valid Photo ID Required\n\n\n\nLocation: TACAW\, 400 Robinson St\, Basalt\, CO 81621\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented By: TACAW

Be ready for a delightful re-interpretation of classic Christmas & Holiday music through the lens of Early Swing & Hot-Club Jazz. Burning Gypsy jazz tunes mixed with Carol of the Bells\, Honeysuckle Rose mixed with Let it Snow\, and so much more! \n\n\n\nABOUT LAPOMPE: \n\n\n\nFor over a decade\, LAPOMPE has been entertaining and delighting audiences in Colorado with their eclectic combination of gypsy swing\, blues\, and soulful originals. Drawing from the music of Django Reinhardt and the “hot club” style of early 20th-century jazz\, their music is a fresh collection of classics and original compositions. Presenting complex and virtuosic arrangements with rustic\, acoustic instrumentation including acoustic guitars\, upright bass\, and violin\, they have described themselves as “mountain swing” – the kind of music that fits as well in a log cabin as it does in a speakeasy or on the big stage. \n\n\n\nThe band has been nominated by multiple publications for Best Jazz Band on the Front Range and won the 2017 Producers Choice award at the Westword Music Showcase. With headlining spots at City Park Jazz\, Swallow Hill Music\, and the Oriental Theater\, as well as recurring appearances at Dazzle Jazz and the Speakeasy Soiree\, LAPOMPE has become a frequent sight in the Denver music scene. They have shared the stage supporting acts like Squirrel Nut Zippers\, Asleep at the Wheel\, Double Vision (ft. David Sandborn\, Bob James\, and Marcus Miller)\, and Hazel Miller. Often collaborating with and featuring local favorites and nationally recognized musicians\, the rotating cast of characters on stage bring all sorts of exciting voices to fans of jazz\, blues\, Americana\, and local original music. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\n\nVIEW CALENDAR\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDETAILS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSHOW @ 8:00 pm / DOORS @ 7:00 pm\n\n\n\nSEATED SHOW / ALL AGES (Under 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian)\n\n\n\nALL TICKET SALES ARE FINAL\n\n\n\nLimit of 4 tickets per purchaser\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented By: The Arts Campus At Willits

Today\, the group has become one of Yale’s most celebrated traditions\, with over a century of musical excellence. \n\n\n\nSinging a mixture of old Yale tunes\, jazz standards\, and other hits from across the decades\, the Whiffenpoofs perform more than 200 concerts each year. Each week the podcast features an in-depth interview with a fiction\, non-fiction\, essay\, or poetry writer. The show is equal parts investigation into the craft of writing and conversation about the topics of an author’s work. \n\n\n\nABOUT A COMPLETE FICTION \n\n\n\nWith little evidence\, would-be author P.J. Larkin serves a “nibble” on the trendy new social-media app Crave\, accusing editor George Dunn of stealing the novel she submitted to him for publication. The nibble shoots to the top of the site’s Popular Menu Items and before you can say “unpaid literary labor\,” George is embroiled in a scandal\, his job and book deal in jeopardy. P.J.’s novel is snapped up amid the publicity\, but has she revealed her sister Mia’s secrets in the book? Some diners on Crave think so\, and now it’s P.J.’s turn to feel the public’s scorn. Told in the humorous vein of Where’d You Go\, Bernadette?\, A Complete Fiction examines the very serious questions of who has a right to tell a story\, and has cancel culture gone too far in our social media-drenched world?  \n\n\n\nABOUT R.L. MAIZES \n\n\n\nR.L. Maizes’s debut novel\, Other People’s Pets\, won the 2021 Colorado Book Award in Fiction and was a Library Journal Best Debut of Summer/Fall 2020. She is also the author of the short story collection We Love Anderson Cooper. Her stories have aired on National Public Radio and can be found in Electric Literature’s Recommended Reading and in The Best Small Fictions 2020. Maizes’s essays have appeared in The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, O Magazine\, McSweeney’s Internet Tendency\, and have aired on NPR. She is a Virginia Center for the Creative Arts Fellow and the recipient of a Fellowship Grant from the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture for 2024-2025 for her novel-in-progress. She lives in Niwot\, Colorado. \n\n\n\nLearn more about R.L. A true Southern Spectacle and one of queer country’s leading voices\, the inspiring singer-songwriter is brave enough to truly be himself – and help others do the same. His third album Southern Spectacle is a loud-and-proud soundtrack for those who break the mold\, mixing the joyful energy of pop and funk with a down-home heart (because nobody is just one thing). Raised in Russellville\, Kentucky\, Mac grew up a farm-and-church kid loving The Spice Girls and Shania Twain\, who’s non-stop singing soon moved from the bedroom to Sunday services and talent shows. By 22 he had moved to Nashville to write songs he thought the mainstream would accept\, but by his own admission\, nearly 10 years of struggle led nowhere – until he realized he was doing “three chords and the truth” all wrong. Fusing vocal soul with a danceable country-funk mix (and the full fabulousness of his personality)\, 2023’s breakout hit “Disco Cowboy” set Mac free. The rapturous music video held the #1 spot on CMT’s 12-Pack Countdown for four weeks\, leading to a full album of the same name and a pandora’s box of conversations. After protestors forced Mac to cancel a hometown performance\, waves of supporters joined his cause\, including Kelsey Ballerini and Maren Morris\, who invited Mac to open her Lunatic Tour in Chicago. The national media also took notice\, with Mac’s music hailed by Billboard\, Entertainment Weekly\, Out\, GLAAD\, and PEOPLE\, calling Mac “country music’s very own Elton John.” Southern Spectacle is the end result – a definitive intersection of country music and queer identity. Arriving in 2025\, 12 songs co-written by Mac with close friends (including at least one other queer creator on each track) mark a work of cloud-nine courage\, with a resilient\, revelatory sense of self acceptance. Louder and prouder than ever\, and with a true community in his corner\, Mac finally embraces his own story\, contrasts and quirks included. His work might invite the scorn of a few\, but also gives his fellow Southern Spectacles permission to strut. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT CHRIS HOUSMAN\n\n\n\nGenre: Country \n\n\n\nWEBSITE / FACEBOOK / INSTAGRAM / TWITTER / YOUTUBE / SPOTIFY / TIKTOK \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChris Housman is a multi-faceted musician and boundary-breaking singer-songwriter who lives by the mantra “y’all means all.” Hailed by The Tennessean as “one of Nashville’s most authentically soulful singer-songwriters” and praised by Billboard for giving a voice to “outcasts in the genre\,” Housman is helping lead a powerful shift toward inclusivity and truth in storytelling. \n\n\n\nRaised on a farm outside the tiny rural town of Hanston\, Kansas (population 200)\, the stage was set early for Housman to chase big dreams. At just seven years old\, he began performing in his family band\, teaching himself to play the fiddle and soaking in the magic of making music. That early spark evolved into extraordinary versatility—he now sings and plays guitar\, piano\, upright bass\, saxophone\, drums\, banjo\, spoons\, and even placed 5th in the world at an International Whistling Competition. “I love picking up an instrument with no idea what im doing\, it opens up an entirely different world of sound and inspiration for me.” \n\n\n\nDubbed as “the ‘gayme-changer’ the country music field needed\,” by USA Today\, his critically acclaimed debut album Blueneck was a bold and proud introduction to his sharp songwriting\, musical dexterity\, and unwavering commitment to his story. The title track debuted at #1 on the iTunes Country chart\, #4 on the iTunes all-genre chart\, and #16 on the Billboard Digital Sales chart\, with the album amassing over 7 million streams so far. \n\n\n\n“Regarding ‘Blueneck\,’ it’s not a coincidence that the song that is the most authentic and kind of my identity song about my story\, that’s the thing that resonated the most. It was so validating\, I can’t even express what that did for me.” \n\n\n\nThe project offers a poignant\, witty reflection of his true identity\, which is delivered with hooks as compelling as the message behind them. Rolling Stone called the title track “a defiant anthem of staying true to your heart in the face of a world that tells you to dim your shine\,” while Billboard also stated the project “melds a ’90s country sound with songs that reflect Housman’s own truths and journey.” \n\n\n\nAs he looks ahead at this new chapter\, Housman hopes to create songs that he wishes he had heard when growing up. Undeniably country\, harkening back to his days on his family’s farm\, this new collection of music will further cement his place in the genre.  \n\n\n\n“I see this massive gap missing in the genre\, and I see that as an opportunity to grow the genre more. I’ve always loved country; I think Lainey [Wilson] said this at an award show\, that she was waiting for country to love her back\, and I truly felt that. \n\n\n\nHousman’s music breathes life into his truth\, telling stories that resonate across genre lines while serving as a beacon of representation for the LGBTQ+ community and his organic following of over 300k online followers.  \n\n\n\nRooted in lived experience and honesty\, he continues to write and perform songs that have become a safe space for all country fans\, especially those who have long felt unseen. “I don’t see any reason why anyone should feel excluded from anything\, let alone a genre a music\,” he says of his vision for his legacy. “Country music is so incredibly powerful and healing\, it should be for everyone”. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT ASPEN GAY SKI WEEK \n\n\n\nAspen Gay Ski Week (AGSW) is the oldest annual\, week-long LGBTQ+ ski event in the nation. Originating as ski bums playing house parties in Salt Lake City’s Cottonwood Canyons\, they’ve evolved into a nationally touring band that always aims to have the most fun possible. Along with the skill and expertise that comes from nearly a decade of performing together\, they bring the energy of closing weekend at your favorite ski resort to the stage. Their unique blend of heartfelt songwriting\, high velocity instrumental excellence\, silly outfits\, and sing-along anthems has captivated audiences nationwide. Pixie and The Partygrass Boys invite the audience into their world every time they take the stage\, hoping to share a piece of the magic they’ve found on the mountain tops and in the desert canyons of their Utah home.  \n\n\n\nPixie and The Partygrass Boys have been touring extensively since the release of their 2018 debut EP “Utah Made” at countless venues across the USA. Notable festival appearances include becoming a five-year fixture at WinterWonderGrass\, as well as gracing the stages of Bourbon and Beyond\, High Sierra Music Festival\, Northwest String Summit\, Jam Cruise\, Rockygrass\, Walnut Valley Festival\, Blue Ox Music Festival\, Delfest\, Sawtooth Valley Gathering\, Gem and Jam\, and Hangtown. They have also directly supported musical greats such as Billy Strings\, The Infamous Stringdusters\, Grace Potter\, Lindsay Lou\, The Brothers Comatose\, and Lake Street Dive.  \n\n\n\nSigning with Americana Vibes in 2023 marked the release of their 4th album\, “The Chicken Coop Sessions: Vol. 1\,” honoring their origins with the nostalgic covers that brought them together for those canyon house parties so many years ago.  \n\n\n\nTheir latest album\, ‘Pixie & The Partygrass Boys\,’ explores the full spectrum of the human experience. Merging the traditional sounds of Appalachia with the unbridled wildness of the Mountain West\, Pixie and The Partygrass Boys weave a musical tapestry that leaps from the speakers to captivate the heart of the listener. Whether you’re wild and free (as all things are meant to be)\, dissolving a relationship into nothing\, skiing through knee deep snow in a secret ski spot (because there’s no friends on a powder day)\, or marching on to find love and beauty despite the troubling times we find ourselves living in\, everyone wild find a home in their music and lyrical content.  \n\n\n\nTheir self-titled release is a departure from their conventional stringband approach of the past. Recorded at Man vs. Music studios in their hometown of Salt Lake City\, produced and engineered by Utah legend Michael Sasich\, Pixie and the Partygrass Boys incorporated every tool in the toolbox to bring their songs to life. By enhancing their non-traditional bluegrass quintet with drums\, pedal steel\, trumpets\, ethereal guitar choirs\, baritone guitar\, electric bass\, and a makeshift choir composed of their closest friends\, they craft a sonic exploration of unconventional musical landscapes.  \n\n\n\nLooking forward to 2025 with fresh songs\, another album on the way\, and their first year of international touring\, Pixie and The Partygrass Boys will be bringing their high-energy show to a town near you. As exciting and energetic as their latest album is\, it is eclipsed by their high-octane live performances. Featuring high kicks\, fun outfits\, intimate stage banter\, dad jokes\, and high-velocity musical excellence\, their show is unforgettable and not to be missed. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT DJ CASTANEA\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFACEBOOK / SPOTIFY \n\n\n\nUnder the alias CASTANEA\, David Brown of Rising Appalachia brings his musical versatility to the forefront\, combining acoustic and electronic elements. Known for his skills on the upright bass and baritone guitar\, Brown also excels in turntables and production\, creating a sound that is as immersive as it is innovative. The name CASTANEA\, referring to a tree species reviving from near extinction in North America’s eastern forests\, symbolizes the rejuvenation and transformation present in his music.
