SUMMARY:Dar Williams
DESCRIPTION:Dar Williams\n\n\n\nW/ Ruth Theodore \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSHOW @ 8:00 pm / DOORS @ 7:00 pm \n\n\n\n$45 MEMBER / $50 ADVANCE / $60 DAY OF \n\n\n\nSEATED SHOW / ALL AGES (Under 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nALL TICKET SALES ARE FINALLimit of 4 tickets per purchaserGroup Sales are available to our Business Advocates\, learn more \n\n\n\nUNDERWRITTEN BY DICK CARTER \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT DAR WILLIAMS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGenre: Folk \n\n\n\nWEBSITE / FACEBOOK / INSTAGRAM / YOUTUBE / SPOTIFY \n\n\n\n“It’s a highway\, filled with deep\, exotic colors and beautiful delicate things as well as the perils that come from moving so fast\,” says Dar Williams\, describing modern life. On her 13th album\, Hummingbird Highway\, out September 12 on Righteous Babe Records\, Williams celebrates the colors she glimpses from her vantage as a touring musician. “I was a kid from the suburbs who listened when her hippie teachers said to get out in the world\,” Williams muses. Hummingbird Highway is the latest chapter in a richly unfolding story. Drawing on her experience as a playwright\, Williams populates her latest album with nuanced characters that come alive in the space of a few minutes. \n\n\n\nOn the title track\, Williams sings from the perspective of a child speaking to her peripatetic and sometimes struggling parent. Blooming columbines\, china blue teapots\, and cinnamon bark number among the “treasures” in her life\, despite the “pirates” that she imagines populating her worldly parent’s life. “The pirates can be all sorts of things living inside and outside your head. The child\, for better or worse\, knows that there is joy\, unpredictability\, and instability on the home front. She’s rooting for the joy.” \n\n\n\nSince 2013\, Williams has been leading songwriting workshops where she teaches students to let songs find their own trajectories. While writing the breezy bossa nova “Tu Sais Le Printemps\,” (single release 7/29/25) Williams questioned why she was writing a light\, flirty song amidst many gloomy news stories. “I was having coffee with some of my fellow retreat leaders and Beth Nielsen Chapman\, telling them about my ‘frilly’ song\, and Beth said\, ‘That’s just what I want to hear right now!’ It was a nice moment to follow my own advice and let the song find its way.” \n\n\n\nWith help from Williams’ collaborators\, the other songs found their paths as well. Mainly produced by Ken Rich at Brooklyn’s Grand Street recording (with two tracks produced by Dave Chalfant in Western Massachusetts)\, the Hummingbird Highway sessions were a microcosm of the interdependence that provided inspiration from inception to full production. These songs are ecosystems that thrive on co-creation. Daisy Mayhem brings roots-rock energy to the bluegrassy “Put the Coins on His Eyes\,” while long time touring-mate and collaborator Bryn Roberts creates both the hooks and immersive sonic landscapes of every musical genre. Simpatico “studio magic” can be heard in the happy rowdiness of the Richard Thompson cover\, “I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight\,” as well as in the contemplative “Sacred Mountain” where Williams wraps a halting melody around the narrator\, a Buddhist who struggles to reconcile inward contemplation and political action. Through gray skies\, snow pigeons\, and petitions to stem industrial pollution\, the character moves through shifting mindsets to work towards “what we see; what we breathe in time.” \n\n\n\nWilliams sees and breathes the way people connect with one another\, as chronicled in what she calls her “take on urban planning\,” What I Found in a Thousand Towns (Basic Books\, 2017). “I traveled and watched how other people created these cool things like town-wide science fairs and hilarious celebrations of potatoes and chili\, often going hand-in-hand with providing serious resources like food banks and free clinics\,” she recalls. Along the way\, she’s seen the devotion of strong unions (as in “Put the Coins On His Eyes”) and congressional reps alike. “Maryland\, Maryland” was inspired by conversations with her friend\, Rep. Jamie Raskin\, about what a new state song would include. “In the end\, my definition of a Maryland song was song about Jamie\, who is a proud\, patriotic son of the state.” As Williams continuously takes in the social landscapes of towns and cities\, she has also taken them home\, helping to start a thrift sale\, chairing a community board\, and helping to organize group sings in her New York hometown. “For someone who’s seen a lot of pavement and airports along with all the great places where I’ve played\, it’s especially nice to come home\,” she says. \n\n\n\nAs hummingbirds and folk singers fly\, they gain perspective and not just distance. She finds that wise perch on “Olive Tree\,” a single out on August 26. With production of stirring percussion and twinkling keys\, she considers everything that’s led up to our current moment. Williams observes “all of these strangers and friends” talking about world events at parties and dinner gatherings and thinks back to all the iterations of those conversations from Aristotle on. In a moving verse\, she conjures a time in 1913 when California Berkeley scientists planted an olive grove in the United States and imagined the generations who would meet in the olive trees’ shade for “over one thousand years.” When Williams promises “I’ll meet you here under an olive tree\,” we all know that both she and we will\, wherever and whenever we continue to foster olive trees and a human-scale\, deeply-rooted democratic society. \n\n\n\nLongtime listeners know that Williams and her music are always up for those kinds of conversations that glimpse the brightest colors\, woven into the larger context of time. “As I’ve gotten older\, I feel more comfortable holding a lot of different threads in my hand to create more complicated patterns. Time has given me a better ability to hold a bunch of colors and temperaments and see what happens\, where they become interesting new stories and also where I need to stop and untangle the themes and characters. It’s daunting\, and I’ve learned that\, you know\, daunting is fine\, just keep going.” \n\n\n\nABOUT RUTH THEODORE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDistinguished british artist and ‘original folk voice’ Ruth Theodore has been steadily releasing critically acclaimed studio albums for over a decade. \n\n\n\nHaving started her career as a street busker on England’s south coast\, Ruth is now signed to Ani DiFranco’s Righteous Babe records and sharing labels\, stages and studios with iconic international artists\, as a performer\, writer and recently co-producer\, making her critically acclaimed music alongside long term collaborators; Tony and Grammy award winning producer and bassist Todd Sickafoose\, and Swiss-American virtuoso percussionist Mathias Kunzli.  \n\n\n\nRuth’s music is inspired by lived experience which makes her a folk singer in essence\, but there’s a strong sense of playful rebellion in her delivery that embodies hints of 1920s vauderville theatre\, buckets of indie punk rock attitude and the relentless lyrical energy of a beat poet. \n\n\n\nBusking and performing in bars from the age of 14 and then self releasing her first three records on DIY label River Rat Records\, Ruth has led a nomadic existence\, living between river boats\, squats\, and artist workshops in East London up until 2020 when she moved to co-run a music venue in the south of England.  Theodore’s music reflects her naturally transient personality.  \n\n\n\nOver her career Theodore has carved a unique and instantly recognizable style that has seen her described as an “Original Folk Voice” in the Guardian; “A master of the long-form” and “An Institution” in FATEA magazine. As well as inviting record deals with London based label Aveline Records and current US based label Righteous Babe Records.  \n\n\n\nRuth’s music and lyricism effortlessly pushes the boundaries of gender and genre.   \n\n\n\nTheodore is currently working on her 7th studio record and can be found touring the UK\, USA and EU both solo and with her dynamic four piece band. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\n\nVIEW CALENDAR\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDETAILS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSHOW @ 8:00 pm / DOORS @ 7:00 pm\n\n\n\nSEATED SHOW / ALL AGES (Under 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian)\n\n\n\nALL TICKET SALES ARE FINAL\n\n\n\nLimit of 4 tickets per purchaser\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented By: The Arts Campus At Willits

One of today’s most thoughtful and prolific voices\, he has released eleven studio albums including 2019’s widely acclaimed ‘Fever Breaks’ of which NPR Music praised\, “He remains a hydrant of ideas while embodying an endless capacity for empathy and indignation\, often within a single song.” \n\n\n\nHis twelfth studio album ‘I Believe in You\, My Honeydew’ is out now. Two-plus decades into his celebrated career\, Ritter has written music that has transcended generations including luminaries such as Bob Dylan\, Joan Baez\, and Bob Weir covering his songs. \n\n\n\nThe Book of Gold Thrown Open tour is meant to encompass the whole of Ritter’s career\, versus focusing on any one studio album. \n\n\n\nIn addition to his work as a musician\, Ritter is also a national best-selling author\, having released two novels to date: 2021’s The Great Glorious Goddamn of It All and 2011’s Bright’s Passage. Released to critical attention\, Stephen King wrote in The New York Times Book Review that Bright’s Passage “shines with a compressed lyricism that recalls Ray Bradbury in his prime…This is the work of a gifted novelist.” \n\n\n\n“Josh Ritter remains at the top of his game two decades into a highlight-strewn career. He’d be forgiven for loosening his grip\, but his hand has never felt surer.” \n\n\n\n– NPR Music \n\n\n\n“Harking back to Bob Dylan\, Bruce Springsteen and maybe a little Mark Knopfler\, Mr. Ritter has always been a slinger of serious ideas and high-flown imagery.” \n\n\n\n– The New York Times \n\n\n\n“Mysterious\, melancholy\, melodic…and those are only the M’s.” \n\n\n\n– Stephen King in Entertainment Weekly \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\n\nVIEW CALENDAR\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDETAILS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSHOW @ 8:00 pm / DOORS @ 7:00 pm\n\n\n\nSEATED SHOW / 16+ (Under 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian)\n\n\n\nALL TICKET SALES ARE FINAL\n\n\n\nLimit of 4 tickets per purchaser\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented By: The Arts Campus At Willits

The duo (Bryce Menchaca and Kellen Wall) first introduced their classic-meets-contemporary musical style through their debut track “66\,” produced by GRAMMY Award winner Nick Waterhouse (Leon Bridges\, Jon Batiste) and recorded at Los Angeles’ legendary EastWest Studios\, the same room that gave life to Pet Sounds and California Dreamin’. Momentum continued with the fan-favorite “Daisy\,” now climbing at radio (#4 at Americana and #39 at AAA). After becoming the first act to sign with Ascend Music (a division of Big Machine Label Group) in July 2025\, Marfa released “Little Miss Two Time\,” which KCRW’s Today’s Top Tunes praised as “music that ties Laurel Canyon to West Texas\,” calling their sound “a proverbial hay bale of beautiful harmonies and foot-stomping good times.” Now with “American Lonely” and “Little Lowdown\,” the duo continues to bring “Denver Americana to the masses” (Westword) as they invite listeners into their expansive sonic imagination. Recently named “Best Breakout Folk Duo” in Westword’s Best of Denver 2025 issue\, Marfa is quickly emerging as one of Americana’s most compelling new acts\, now bringing their roots-meets-rock live show on the road this fall with Southall\, The Mavericks\, and Kashus Culpepper. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT CAYDEN WEMPLE\n\n\n\nINSTAGRAM / TIKTOK / SPOTIFY / APPLE MUSIC \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCayden Wemple is a Los Angeles based Indie-Emo-Folk singer-songwriter. Born and raised in San Luis Obispo\, Wemple picked up guitar at an early age and has been enamored with the instrument ever since. His interest and dedication to songwriting came years later\, gathering musical inspiration from artists such as Bon Iver\, Bright Eyes\, and Phoebe Bridgers. He attended the University of Colorado – Denver\, where he studied songwriting and music business. During college\, Wemple played in an Emo band\, Keep Off the Grass – a project that he spent the better part of 4 years writing and playing shows for. After the band dispersed\, Wemple began writing his own songs again – this time marrying his Indie/Folk roots with his newfound appreciation for Emo music. In the Summer of 2022\, he recorded a group of singles and started posting them on TikTok\, eventually garnering attention and leading him to release his debut single “not to catch you by surprise.” Shortly after being released\, the song received editorial support from Spotify\, landing on Fresh Finds Folk. Since then\, Wemple’s music has continued to find success across streaming and social media platforms\, leading him to be discovered and signed by R&R (records) and Interlude Studios (management). Coming off the release of his recent EP (‘Roommates’)\, as well as having new collaborations with artists such as Runnner\, Shallow Alcove\, Grace Gardner\, and Khatumu out in the world – Wemple’s passion and energy for his craft is at an all-time high. With more unreleased music in the pipeline and a steady stream of live shows on the horizon\, there is much to look forward to from Cayden Wemple. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\n\nVIEW CALENDAR\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDETAILS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSHOW @ 8:00 pm / DOORS @ 7:30 pm\n\n\n\nSTANDING ROOM SHOW / 18+ VALID PHOTO ID REQUIRED\n\n\n\nALL TICKET SALES ARE FINAL\n\n\n\nLimit of 6 tickets per purchaser\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented By: The Arts Campus At Willits

Trained in the rigor of classical composition yet born with a Broadway-bound belt and a novelist’s eye for character\, she weaves deeply personal narratives with a rare melodic sophistication. From her early days with The Story to her solo triumphs\, Brooke has quietly carved a niche where the emotional intelligence of Joni Mitchell meets the musical wit of Stephen Sondheim\, all wrapped in a voice that aches\, sparkles\, and soars\, often within the same phrase. \n\n\n\nA true interdisciplinary artist\, Brooke has not only penned a poignant\, one-woman musical (“My Mother Has 4 Noses”)\, but she has also collaborated with luminaries like Katy Perry\, Joe Sample\, and the late Woody Guthrie\, whose unpublished lyrics she set to music with the reverence of a curator and the daring of a jazz improviser. Whether commanding a stage with nothing but a guitar and a spotlight or orchestrating a lush studio album\, Jonatha Brooke is never simply performing; she is sculpting emotion in midair\, conjuring stories that linger like the final notes of a well-loved sonata. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\n\nVIEW CALENDAR\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDETAILS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSHOW @ 8:00 pm / DOORS @ 7:00 pm\n\n\n\nSEATED SHOW / ALL AGES (Under 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian)\n\n\n\nALL TICKET SALES ARE FINAL\n\n\n\nLimit of 4 tickets per purchaser\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented By: The Arts Campus At Willits

The Roaring Fork Valley sits at the epicenter\, among the hardest-hit areas in the state for severe drought. With snowpack now peaked at historic lows\, climate scientists are drawing comparisons to years that defined what catastrophic wildfire looks like in Colorado. This spring\, wildfire risk across the our valley is as serious as it has ever been. \n\n\n\nOn May 6\, TACAW is partnering with the Wildfire Collaborative Roaring Fork Valley and Aspen Public Radio to bring our community together for a direct conversation about what these conditions mean for our valley\, what local fire departments and researchers are doing about it\, and what each of us can do to protect our homes and our neighbors. The evening begins with a community preparedness fair\, followed by presentations and panels featuring climate scientists\, local fire chiefs\, and researchers whose work is focused specifically on this region. \n\n\n\nIf you’ve been wondering where things actually stand\, this is the event to attend. \n\n\n\nThe evening is organized around three questions: \n\n\n\nWhat are we facing this season? What is being done about it?What happens when fire comes? \n\n\n\nDrawing on the Wildfire Collaborative Roaring Fork Valley’s work in fire behavior modeling and fuels mitigation\, Aspen Public Radio’s deep ties to this community\, and ACES knowledge of historic environmental science\, the program brings together the people best positioned to answer those questions — climate scientists\, local fire chiefs\, researchers\, and emergency response leaders — in one room\, for one conversation. \n\n\n\nAdditional Resources from Wildfire Collaborative Roaring Fork Valley: WEBSITE \n\n\n\nSCHEDULE\n\n\n\n5:00 PM – 6:00 PMPreparedness Fair in lobby6:00 PM – 6:10 PMWelcome\, Thank You and Introductions6:10 PM – 6:30 PMThe Outlook – A presentation focused on observed conditions from this winter\, how they rank within the longer climate record\, and what wildfires have looked like in Colorado for similar years. What is Resiliency? – Given our risk\, how can we prepare for fire right now?Speaker: Adam McCurdy\, ACES Forest and Climate DirectorSpeaker: Angie Davlyn\, Wildfire Collaborative Roaring Fork Valley\, Executive Director6:30 PM – 7:00 PMNew Technology: What are we doing in advance? – A panel focused on cutting-edge wildfire behavior modeling being deployed across the Roaring Fork Valley\, what the data reveals about where risk is concentrated\, and how that science is shaping mitigation priorities on the ground.Speakers: Angie Davlyn\, Executive Director\, Wildfire Collaborative Roaring Fork Valley; Greg LeBlanc\, Snowmass Assistant Town Manager; Rob Goodwin\, Carbondale Fire ChiefModerator: Michael FanelliHow are we responding? – A panel focused on emerging fire response technology\, including autonomous drone systems Aspen Fire is exploring and how these tools are changing suppression capability and incident command in real time.Speakers: Jake Anderson\, Aspen Fire Chief; Scott Thompson\, Roaring Fork Fire Rescue Fire Chief; Brandon Deter\, Colorado River Fire Protection Wildland Fire Division ChiefModerator: Michael Fanelli7:00 PM – 7:30 PMResponse: Communication & Action – As we proactively look for ways to mitigate disasters\, how are local governments\, human service providers\, and our media ecosystem actively preparing for community resilience\, relief\, and disaster recovery? By bringing together fire districts\, local governments\, federal agencies\, HOAs\, and residents\, the Collaborative identifies\, prioritizes\, and implements strategic cross-boundary mitigation projects that address wildfire risk at the scale it occurs. Its work spans landscape-scale fuel reduction\, home-level mitigation and risk assessments\, and advanced community wildfire modeling\, all designed to reduce risk\, improve forest health\, and strengthen community preparedness. Supported by public funding\, partner contributions\, and philanthropy\, the Collaborative is helping position the Roaring Fork Valley as a leader in proactive\, science-driven wildfire resilience. \n\n\n\n Learn more about Wildfire Collaborative Roaring Fork Valley: WEBSITE / INSTAGRAM / FACEBOOK \n\n\n\nABOUT ASPEN PUBLIC RADIO \n\n\n\nAspen Public Radio is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization with the mission to support\, nourish\, and enrich our community by providing informative\, entertaining\, and educational radio and digital programming in a reliable and professional manner. She has also reported for The Denver Post and the Telluride Daily Planet. Heather has a master’s degree from CU’s Center for Environmental Journalism and her reporting has been recognized by the Colorado Press Association.  \n\n\n\nChristina Medved \n\n\n\nChristina Medved is Director of Community Outreach at Roaring Fork Conservancy. She has waded into many rivers across the U.S.\, Peru and Costa Rica\, in search of  macroinvertebrates. In the last 28 years\, Christina has taught thousands of people how to identify these aquatic organisms (fish food!). Christina was born and raised in Cleveland and did a lot of spin casting with her family on the many lakes and ponds that make up Northeast Ohio. (To this day she still believes her big brother is the best angler she knows!) She was used to catching bluegill and bass\, but it was when she moved to Colorado that she started putting her aquatic insect knowledge to the test with fly fishing our world-class rivers. Her favorite fly to tie and fish with are her very own Wooly Buggers. As a certified teacher-trainer of the National Fishing in Schools Program\, Christina has taught hundreds of youth and adults how to fly fish through RFC’s fly fishing camps and clinics over the last 9 years. \n\n\n\nLincoln Neiley \n\n\n\nI grew up here in the Roaring Fork Valley. My dad taught my brother and me how to fish when we were very young. Fly fishing was something we would do every chance we had. We did many trips to the Bighorn\, the Green\, and many floats down the Roaring Fork. I graduated high school in 2004 and took a job working for TIm Heng at the Taylor Creek Fly shop in Basalt. I learned a ton that summer. One of the things I learned was that guiding was more fun than selling flys. I got my first drift boat the following spring\, and started as a guide. I was at the shop for 17 years. In 2022 I renewed the oufitters license that my dad had created in 1988. I am the Owner of Thunder River Outfitters and we take people float fishing on the Roaring Fork and Colorado rivers. I feel fortunate to have incredible guides that I get to work along side: Mike Thomas\, Jeremy Stott\, Matthew Thomas\, and Ed Dieson just to name a few. Getting in a drift boat for a day on our local rivers always puts a smile on my face and helps me remember just how lucky we are to have this incredible fishing in our back yard. \n\n\n\nScott Spooner \n\n\n\n“Spooner” hails from rural Missouri\, where he began his so-called career at an early age fishing for perch\, catfish\, bass and crappie. After he was introduced to the skiing scene in Crested Butte as a youngster\, Colorado’s siren song pulled him westward once he was old enough to fly the coop. After working in the restaurant industry for over 26 years\, Scott began a new career in the fly fishing industry in 2007 and never looked back. Whispered rumors of rainy summer day Fryingpan hatches drew him to the Roaring Fork Valley\, and the myriad year-round fishing opportunities keep him rooted here. Now manager of Taylor Creek Fly Shop\, he tends to be mostly an indoor cat versus outdoor at this point\, but occasionally still guides when his schedule allows. Spooner produces the annual “Fly on the Wall” newspaper and is a weekly columnist in the Aspen Times and Post Independent with the popular “On the Fly” column. He is the Guide Coordinator for the Western Slope’s Casting for Recovery program and enjoys fishing the Louisiana marsh for redfish\, hosting bonefish trips to Christmas Island\, genealogy\, tying flies\, float fishing\, and entomology. \n\n\n\nABOUT CASSIDY WILLEY \n\n\n\nWEBSITE / INSTAGRAM \n\n\n\nArtist Cassidy Willey was born at the confluence of the Roaring Fork and Colorado Rivers and has been raised on rivers ever since. [Try Sun Jr. Radio on Spotify] Yet out of their chemistry\, love of improv and unique configuration of pedal steel\, banjo\, electric guitar\, bass-organ\, and drums\, the band spins Rock n’ Roll in a way that is both classic and indie. \n\n\n\nNever allowing the song structure to harness the impulse of the moment\, Sun Jr. creates a wall of sound through their unique tapestry of folk\, Americana\, and rock\, melded with swirling psychedelic effects\, or what we call Psych-Mountain Rock. Effortlessly slipping through the ebb and flows of ethereal space ballads\, dark surf waltzes\, and swampy foot-stomping jams\, the band plays the moment more than the song.  \n\n\n\nLayered above and within the song\, dynamic dual vocals Jim Heekin and Matt Kubis both compliment and contrast one another\, as Jim’s rumbling twin-engine aircraft echos between desert canyon walls\, Matt’s banished angel calls out into the still mountain night. More an experience than performance\, tune in and drop out with Sun Jr. and you’ll be reverberating in the glow of the little sun for days and nights to come. \n\n\n\nFormed in 2013\, and hailing from Boulder\, Colorado\, Sun Jr. has played in highlighted venues including Mackey Auditorium\, The Boulder Theater\, The Aggie\, E-Town\, The Skylark Lounge\, Cervantes’ Next Door\, Lulu’s Downtown\, Roots Music Project\, The Velvet Elk\, The Lariat\, and Big B’s Delicious Orchard. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\n\nVIEW CALENDAR\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDETAILS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSHOW @ 8:00 pm / DOORS @ 7:00 pm\n\n\n\nSTANDING ROOM SHOW / 21+ VALID PHOTO ID REQUIRED\n\n\n\nALL TICKET SALES ARE FINAL\n\n\n\nLimit of 6 tickets per purchaser\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented By: The Arts Campus At Willits

Each week the podcast features an in-depth interview with a fiction\, non-fiction\, essay\, or poetry writer. The show is equal parts investigation into the craft of writing and conversation about the topics of an author’s work. \n\n\n\nABOUT RASPUTIN SWIMS THE POTOMAC \n\n\n\nRasputin Swims the Potomac is a biting satire of American politics and a searingly intelligent novel about the cruel absurdities of contemporary life\, centering on a world champion professional wrestler with presidential ambitions. Reporter Clarence Thomas Jr. is looking for a great story\, former country music teen star Faith Spack has parlayed her fame into a job at the White House\, and the two-term incumbent president is campaigning for a constitutionally dubious third term. After an outbreak at a campaign rally\, a mysterious new pandemic of “weeping sickness” sweeps the nation\, threatening the president’s hold on the Oval Office. Desperate to retain power\, he enlists the mystical pro wrestler Rasputin to help ensure his reelection and guarantee additional seasons of his presidential reality TV show\, The Real West Wing. But as Rasputin’s appeal threatens to exceed the president’s\, and the wrestler’s supposedly supernatural powers start to seem like the real thing\, the campaign finds itself trapped in a spandex-clad destiny no number of executive orders can control\, one in which both Clarence and Faith are compelled to play increasingly large parts. Hilarious\, compelling\, and tragically relevant\, the novel is both an escape and a warning\, a scathing satire that explores the twists and turns of American democracy as it hurtles toward authoritarianism. \n\n\n\nABOUT BEN FOUNTAIN \n\n\n\nBen Fountain is the author of several works of fiction and nonfiction including the award winning Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk\, which won the National Book Critic’ Circle Award for Fiction. Some of his other work include Brief Encounters with Che Guevera\, Beautiful Country Burn Again\, and Devil Makes Three. His work has received the PEN/Hemingway Award\, the Los Angeles Book Prize for Fiction\, and a Whiting Writers Award\, and has been a finalist for the National Book Award and runner-up for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. He lives in North Carolina. \n\n\n\nLearn more about Ben Fountain: WEBSITE \n\n\n\nABOUT MITZI RAPKIN \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMitzi Rapkin is the founder\, host and producer of the literary podcast\, “First Draft: A Dialogue on Writing\,” which features a new author interview each week. She has interviewed more than 500 contemporary writers of fiction\, nonfiction\, essays\, and poetry over the past eleven years. Her conversations explore essential questions about what it means to be human alongside the craft of writing and the themes of the writers’ works. Rapkin is also a journalist\, fiction writer\, certified integral coach\, facilitator\, and fiction-writing instructor.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn more about / Listen to First Draft: WEBSITE \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP\n\n\n\nVIEW CALENDAR\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDETAILS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEVENT @ 6:30 pm / DOORS @ 5:30 pm\n\n\n\nSEATED SHOW / ALL AGES (Under 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian)\n\n\n\nLimit of 4 tickets per purchaser\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented By: The Arts Campus At Willits

Some ecosystems need ongoing care and stewardship to thrive\, especially in a warming world. This talk will suggest how a perspective shift from saving nature from humans to improving human relationships with other species can enlarge our thinking\, make new approaches possible\, and create an energizing space for mutual human-nonhuman flourishing. \n\n\n\nABOUT EMMA MARRIS  \n\n\n\nEmma Marris grew up in Seattle\, WA\, and while she has lived all over\, she eventually ended up in Portland\, Oregon\, just a few hours away from her hometown. What can she say? She missed the moss. \n\n\n\nEmma has been writing about the environment for over 20 years\, beginning as a staffer at the journal Nature and eventually freelancing for National Geographic\, Wired\, the Atlantic\, Nature\, the New York Times\, among others—as well as writing two popular science books\, Rambunctious Garden (2011) and Wild Souls (2021). She has a Master’s in Science Writing from Johns Hopkins\, 2004. \n\n\n\nEmma has written several peer-reviewed papers for environmental ethics and conservation science journals and contributed to scholarly edited volumes. Her core interest is in human relationships with the nonhuman world\, but she has also written about music\, film\, and even true crime. \n\n\n\nEmma believes in hope\, and she believes that good futures are still available to us. Each week the podcast features an in-depth interview with a fiction\, non-fiction\, essay\, or poetry writer. The show is equal parts investigation into the craft of writing and conversation about the topics of an author’s work. \n\n\n\nABOUT CHILDREN OF THE WILD \n\n\n\nChildren of the Wild is a gorgeous\, haunting love story set in the Virginia mountains and on the battlefields of World War I France. \n\n\n\nRoy Young is restless\, eager to leave this isolated rural valley for university and return with the technical knowledge to modernize his family’s farm and bring them properly into the twentieth century. Samantha Hatton\, the minister’s daughter and Roy’s best friend since childhood\, knows that both Roy and the town expect them to marry. But Samantha\, a daring and ambitious young woman\, hungers for more. Above them on the mountain\, tending to a lost herd of cattle\, is silent Ennis Duke\, the mysterious wild boy whose arrival in the valley will upend Ewer’s Rock’s understanding of itself and its place in the world. Within a year\, the lives of these three young people will be dramatically transformed. America has joined the Great War\, and Roy and Ennis feel duty-bound to join the fight. In the crucible of conflict\, thousands of miles from the familiarity of home\, the two men forge a fierce bond. Meanwhile\, back in Virginia\, Samantha’s love and courage endure unthinkable sacrifice in a corner of the world fractured by violence. \n\n\n\nABOUT KEVIN POWERS \n\n\n\nKevin Powers was born and raised in Richmond\, Virginia. Since publishing his first novel in 2012\, his books have been translated into more than a dozen languages. He has been a finalist for the National Book Award and a recipient of the PEN/Hemingway Award\, the Guardian First Book Award\, the Prix littéraire du Monde prix étranger\, and the Grand Prix de Littérature Américaine\, among other recognitions. He was a James A. Michener Fellow in Poetry at the University of Texas at Austin from 2009-2012 and later held a Guggenheim Fellowship in Fiction. Whether that’s through incisive lyrics or a sound they crafted that’s become mainstream\, the group of troubadours has been steadfast in their truth. On the band’s upcoming album\, titled Country Sides\, The Band of Heathens takes a look back at their career with gratitude and great satisfaction. \n\n\n\nFormed in 2005\, the Heathens broke into the public consciousness in 2009 with their heartfelt blend of country and rock\, including memorable performances at Austin City Limits on PBS and the Austin City Limits Festival. Since then\, members have come and gone\, but principal songwriters Ed Jurdi and Gordy Quist give the band its collective focus and provide the DNA to the songs beloved by folks around the globe. \n\n\n\nFor a band that’s accomplished so much and on their own terms\, the approach for this album was natural and felt right. The themes addressed on this album\, such as the reflective\, contemplative nature of the lyrical matter\, led to questions like “What’s next?” As always\, The Band of Heathens is debating what that future looks like. It certainly includes more music and touring. But\, in what fashion? Not even they know. That said\, their music continues to live on. Look no further than the success of 2011’s “Hurricane. Nearly 15 years later\, the song went gold and has since been certified platinum\, showcasing the band’s resonant sound. And\, at this point in their career\, they’re perfectly content with what they’re doing. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\n\nVIEW CALENDAR\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDETAILS \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDoors open for show @ 7:00pm / Show @ 8:00pm\n\n\n\nSTANDING ROOM | 18+ VALID PHOTO ID REQUIRED\n\n\n\nLocation: TACAW\, 400 Robinson St\, Basalt\, CO 81621\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented By: TACAW

Each week the podcast features an in-depth interview with a fiction\, non-fiction\, essay\, or poetry writer. The show is equal parts investigation into the craft of writing and conversation about the topics of an author’s work. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE WRECK OF THE MENTOR \n\n\n\nThe Wreck of the Mentor is the story of the American whaleship Mentor\, wrecked in 1832 on a remote reef in the western Pacific. With supplies dwindling\, the eleven surviving crewmen face not only the miseries of shipwreck in unfamiliar territory but also the profound uncertainty of contact with the Indigenous people of the Micronesian archipelago of Palau\, who within days approach the deserted men brandishing axes\, clubs\, and spears. In this gripping saga of cultural collision\, tribal wars\, and dashed hopes\, award–winning historian Eric Jay Dolin vividly reconstructs the Mentor’s doomed voyage\, the years of perilous captivity\, and the delicate negotiations and fraught naval rescue mission that followed. The Wreck of the Mentor is at once a powerful story of survival and a revealing window into the great Age of Sail―a time when maritime ambition collided with local sovereignty\, and when the outcome of one voyage rippled across oceans and empires. \n\n\n\nABOUT ERIC JAY DOLIN \n\n\n\nEric Jay Dolin is the author of seventeen books\, including Leviathan: The History of Whaling in America; A Furious Sky: The Five-Hundred-Year History of America’s Hurricanes and Rebels at Sea: Privateering in the American Revolution. His newest book coming out in June\, is The Wreck of the Mentor: A True Story of Death\, Despair\, and Deliverance in the Age of Sail. Dolin’s books have won many awards including the John Lyman Award for U.S. Maritime History; Fraunces Tavern Museum Book Award; and National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Excellence in American History Book Award for Adult Nonfiction among others. Many of his books have been chosen as “must reads” by the Massachusetts Center for the Book. Other honors include being chosen as a finalist for the Kirkus Prize\, and as one of the best books of the year by The Los Angeles Times\, The Boston Globe\, The Washington Post\, Kirkus Reviews\, the Library Journal\, and Booklist. Dolin lives in Marblehead\, Massachusetts\, with his family. \n\n\n\nLearn more about Eric Jay Dolin: WEBSITE / FACEBOOK \n\n\n\nABOUT MITZI RAPKIN \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMitzi Rapkin is the founder\, host and producer of the literary podcast\, “First Draft: A Dialogue on Writing\,” which features a new author interview each week. Scott Fitzgerald issued his classic conclusion that ‘There are no second acts in American lives\,’ he failed to envision the career of legendary Texas troubadour Ray Wylie Hubbard. A willing conspirator in the late seventies Cosmic Cowboy revolt that ushered in the mythical Outlaw era\, Hubbard was a catalyst in the cultural upheaval that led to the peaceful coexistence of Lone Star music enthusiasts who comprised each end of the social and political spectrum of that troubled time. In the stellar company of iconic colleagues like Willie Nelson\, Waylon Jennings\, Doug Sahm and Jerry Jeff Walker\, Ray Wylie Hubbard was an architect of the musical legacy that continues to inspire subsequent generations of up-and-coming Texas talent. \n\n\n\nYes\, Hubbard is a Texas singer-songwriter\, complete with the classic trifurcated handle\, fundamental chapter of the canon in his song catalog (“Redneck Mother”)\, and enough wild hairs in his past to qualify him as a legend. But along the way\, his attention began to leave matters extraneous to his art and soul by the wayside and focus on the beauty and potential to be found in the blank canvas of\, in his case\, the yet to be written and recorded song. The result has been one of the most satisfying musical and lyrical journeys to witness over the last two decades. In the years that followed he evolved into a writer of uncommonly honest portraits of life\, alternately mixing deep personal sagas with poignant character studies of those traveling on the dark side of the road. \n\n\n\n If one wanted to describe the sound of Ray Wylie Hubbard\, one could call it American music\, born from the time honored traditions of folk\, country\, and roots rock.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\n\nVIEW CALENDAR\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDETAILS\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSHOW @ 8:00 pm / DOORS @ 7:00 pm\n\n\n\nSEATED SHOW / 16+ (Under 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian)\n\n\n\nALL TICKET SALES ARE FINAL\n\n\n\nLimit of 4 tickets per purchaser\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented By: The Arts Campus At Willits
