Also\, there are two vocalists\, one male and one female\, who perform individually and as part of The Moonlight Serenaders® vocal group. The “Road Book” carried by the Glenn Miller Orchestra adds up to over 300 charts-many of them out of the original library. Today\, the complete library totals over 1\,700 compositions including all of the original charts from both the civilian band and the Army Air Force Band. \n\n\n\nThe Glenn Miller Orchestra has always been very musical\, disciplined\, and visually entertaining. And it has its own distinctive “sound.” That sound is created by the clarinet holding the melodic line\, doubled or coupled with the tenor sax playing the same notes; and the harmonies produced by three other saxophones\, while growling trombones and wailing trumpets add their oo-ahs. \n\n\n\nGlenn Miller and His Orchestra made a big impact right before and during the war. And it had more hit records in one year than anybody in the history of the recording industry. In fact\, its recording of Chattanooga Choo-Choo earned the first Gold Record ever awarded to a performing artist. Additional Gold Record recordings include “In the Digital Mood” and “In The Christmas Mood\,” Volume I & II. Back in the days of the big band era of the forties\, any dance band “worth its salt” had a distinctive theme song. It was the musical signature with which they signed on and signed off at their engagements and radio broadcasts. The theme of Glenn Miller and His Orchestra was the beautiful Moonlight Serenade\, and it is still the signature tune of the Glenn Miller Orchestra today. Interestingly enough\, Glenn Miller originally wrote the music of the song himself as an exercise for a course in arranging. He composed it long before he organized his band\, when he was a trombonist and arranger with Ray Noble’s famous band. \n\n\n\nToday\, it is considered a standard in the field of popular music with its popularity as an instrumental continuing undiminished through the years. Glenn Miller disappeared on December 15\, 1944. The bandleader went down over the English Channel on a flight from London to Paris at the height of his popularity. In September 1942\, just prior to going into the army\, he disbanded his famous orchestra and eventually formed the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band to entertain the servicemen. Not long before he enlisted\, he nosed out Tommy Dorsey\, the “Best Sweet Band” in the Downbeat poll. His recordings of In The Mood\, Chattanooga Choo Choo\, A String of Pearls\, Moonlight Serenade\, and Tuxedo Junction were all major hit records. Miller played to sell-out crowds\, and his music constantly dominated the airwaves. On December 15\, Major Miller took off in an ancient\, single-engine plane to precede his band to Paris. The weather was foreboding. Not very confident\, he said to the pilot\, “Maybe we ought to call this off?” The flight officer ribbed him about his fear of flying\, “Do you want to live forever?” \n\n\n\nNow\, over sixty years since the public first embraced the successful Miller Sound\, both the legend and the music live on. The Glenn Miller Orchestra is the most sought-after big band in the world today for both concert and dance engagements. Still considered the greatest band of all time\, its unique sound is loved by almost anybody that cares for dance music. The Miller Estate formed the present Glenn Miller Orchestra in 1956 following strong popular demand aroused as a result of the successful motion picture\, an immense box office smash – The Glenn Miller Story\, starring James Stewart and June Allyson. The Iron Curtain Tour seems to be a curious decision by the band\, which was at the very height of their popularity. \n\n\n\nUpon their return\, the band becomes a victim of the significant societal upheaval and culture wars in a polarized America\, divided as much then as it is now. Political criticism typically comes from one side or the other. But in 1970\, Blood\, Sweat & Tears find themselves in the crossfire from both the Right AND the Left and the group suffers greatly as a result. Suddenly\, they are no longer hip and cool and lose support from fans\, the media\, concert bookers and the recording industry. \n\n\n\nIn short\, the Right is outraged by the U.S. government footing the bill for an anti-war/anti-Nixon rock band to tour overseas and refer to Blood\, Sweat & Tears members as “Communists”. Although his career as a band leader has spanned a decade\, his solo songwriting career began in 1997. He has written and released 10 all-original albums to date. Clay Rose’s ability to tell stories that seamlessly cross genres from folk\, to punk\, to klezmer\, to country has won him an array of awards. These include: 105.5 The Colorado Sound’s Best Local Band award for 2021 and 2022\, Best Country Band Award\, by Westword Magazine 2015 and 2018\, as well as Colorado Daily’s Best Local Band award for 2015\, 2016\, and 2017. \n\n\n\nIn 2020 Rose released Gasoline Lollipops’ 6th album\, All The Misery Money Can Buy\, at Red Rocks Amphitheatre to national critical acclaim. Gasoline Lollipops released their pandemic album\, Nightmares at the Boulder Theater in 2022 to a full house. In 2018 Rose was commissioned by Wonderbound Ballet Company in Denver to write a full-length ballet using all original music written for his other band\, The Widow’s Bane. The following year Wonderbound commissioned a 2nd full-length ballet set to the music of Gasoline Lollipops entitled\, The Sandman. Wonderbound will be opening their 2023 season with a reprise of The Sandman. Rose is also working with acclaimed Colorado play write\, Doug Vincent\, to revise and recreate his award-winning one-man play\, Heart of Grace\, which they will be touring coast to coast in late fall of 2023. It challenges the historical teachings of cultural competence and offers cultural humility as a best practice against the barriers that prevent us from forming authentic connections\, practicing holistic wellness\, and shifting the way power is seen and used. We will highlight that there is no “expert” or ending point in race equity and how to have authentic dialogue to work toward equity. \n\n\n\nBios:  \n\n\n\nKenya Johnson\, PhD\, MSW: Dr. Kenya Johnson (she/her) is co-founder and managing principal of Full Circle Strategies. She has over twenty years of teaching experience in higher education at the undergraduate and graduate levels having taught various courses in sociology and social work. In addition to her extensive teaching career\, she has extensive practice in facilitating conversations around race and anti-racism. She was trained as a dismantling racism facilitator through the Western States Center in Portland\, Oregon and Race Forward in Chicago\, Illinois. She has facilitated multiple training sessions for grassroots organizers\, college students\, labor groups\, government employees\, and non-profit organizations throughout the Midwest and Western regions\, along with her national work with Full Circle Strategies. \n\n\n\nDonisha Shepard\, MSW: Donisha Shepherd (she/her) serves as Talent and Wellness Strategist & HEARTspeak Facilitator with Full Circle Strategies. Donisha had dedicated her work to the long-term goal of decolonizing the profession she has dedicated her life to. She believes that anti-racism work is necessary and provides an opportunity for everyone to “rethink what we think we know”\, unlearn the teachings that divided us\, and learn how to utilize our differences as building blocks to becoming better as a whole. Donisha became heavily politically engaged as a voter registration official in Harris County and other counties surrounding Houston. Donisha has extensive political organizing and education experience. Before joining Full Circle\, Donisha participated in the Texas legislative session where she was able to analyze policy based on its impacts on working class Texans while assessing the lack of urgency Texas leaders had on issues that disproportionately impacted Black and Brown Texans. \n\n\n\nDonisha is a graduate of the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work (GCSW) where she received her Master’s degree in Social Work with a Macro concentration. \n\n\n\nLuana Da Silva\, LCSW-S\, SEP: Luana Da Silva (they/she) is a somatic-based trauma and cultural worker. Luana has been called to engage with the impact of generational trauma and/or grief through a decolonial lens with people across varied identities\, situations and settings. Currently they do so by engaging in different forms of therapeutic work\, birth work\, community and cultural work\, in addition to their ongoing personal work. It didn’t seem to do much good\, though. For\, after a shaky\, lopsided battle between piano lessons and baseball (he was a mediocre pianist and an all-star catcher)\, he had “found his voice” thanks to a cheap mail-order guitar and a used book of chords. \n\n\n\nFrom such inauspicious beginnings\, John McCutcheon has emerged as one of our most respected and loved folksingers. As an instrumentalist\, he is a master of a dozen different traditional instruments\, most notably the rare and beautiful hammer dulcimer. His songwriting has been hailed by critics and singers around the globe. His thirty recordings have garnered every imaginable honor including seven Grammy nominations. He has produced over twenty albums of other artists\, from traditional fiddlers to contemporary singer-songwriters to educational and documentary works. His books and instructional materials have introduced budding players to the joys of their own musicality. And his commitment to grassroots political organizations has put him on the front lines of many of the issues important to communities and workers. \n\n\n\nEven before graduating summa cum laude from Minnesota’s St. John’s University\, this Wisconsin native literally “headed for the hills\,” forgoing a college lecture hall for the classroom of the eastern Kentucky coal camps\, union halls\, country churches\, and square dance halls. His apprenticeship to many of the legendary figures of Appalachian music imbedded a love of homemade music and a sense of community and rootedness. The result is music…whether traditional or from his huge catalog of original songs…with the profound mark of place\, family\, and strength. It also created a storytelling style that has been compared to Will Rogers and Garrison Keillor. \n\n\n\nThe Washington Post described John as folk music’s “Rustic Renaissance Man\,” a moniker flawed only by its understatement. “Calling John McCutcheon a ‘folksinger’ is like saying Deion Sanders is just a football player…” (Dallas Morning News). Besides his usual circuit of major concert halls and theaters\, John is equally at home in an elementary school auditorium\, a festival stage or at a farm rally. He is a whirlwind of energy packing five lifetimes into one. In the past few years alone he has headlined over a dozen different festivals in North America (including repeated performances at the National Storytelling Festival)\, recorded an original composition for Virginia Public Television involving over 500 musicians\, toured Australia for the sixth time\, toured Chile in support of a women’s health initiative\, appeared in a Woody Guthrie tribute concert in New York City\, gave a featured concert at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival\, taught performance art skills at a North Carolina college\, given symphony pops concerts across America\, served as President of the fastest-growing Local in the Musicians Union and performed a special concert at the National Baseball Hall of Fame. This is all in his “spare time.” His “real job\,” he’s quick to point out\, is father to two grown sons. \n\n\n\nBut it is in live performance that John feels most at home. As a comedian\, Bobcat has starred in numerous HBO/Showtime specials\, performed in venues all over the world\, and even went on tour as an opening act for the band Nirvana. \n\n\n\nWell known for his roles in “Scrooged” with Bill Murray and as Zed in the “Police Academy” franchise\, Goldthwait has gone on to become a well-respected Award-Winning Director. His Directorial works include Television (Jimmy Kimmel\, Chappell’s Show\, Community\, Maron\, Those Who Can’t)\, feature films (World’s Greatest Dad starring Robin Williams\, Willow Creek starring Bigfoot\, God Bless America\, Windy City Heat\, and Sleeping Dogs Lie) and documentaries (Call Me Lucky and Joy Ride). In addition to being a 4x Sundance Alumni\, Goldthwait’s films have played internationally including Deauville Film Festival and San Sebastian Film Festival. Bobcat has been honored with the German Independent Honorary Award at Oldenburg Film Festival for his collective works. Bobcat has also directed numerous standup comedy specials (Patton Oswalt\, Marc Maron\, Ron Funches\, Iliza Shleshinger\, Mo Willems\, Gary Gulman\, Hari Kondabolu\, Eugene Mirman) and is currently working on converting his critically acclaimed documentary “Call Me Lucky” into a narrative film with Judd Apatow. His 2020 album Spider Tales (named one of the year’s best albums by NPR and The New Yorker\, earned a perfect 5-star review from The Guardian) highlighted the Black and Indigenous histories of popular American folk tunes\, as well as revived songs unjustly forgotten in the whitewashing of the canon. Jake Blount’s new album\, The New Faith\, is a towering achievement of dystopian Afrofuturism and his first album for Smithsonian Folkways (coming September 23\, 2022). The New Faith is spiritual music\, filled with hope for salvation and righteous anger in equal measure. The album manifests our worst fears on the shores of an island in Maine\, where Blount enacts an imagined religious ceremony performed by Black refugees after the collapse of global civilization due to catastrophic climate change. From his hometown of Clarksdale\, Mississippi to stages around the world\, the now 22-year-old has already headlined two national tours and performed with friends including Vampire Weekend\, Jason Isbell and Buddy Guy (with whom he appeared on Austin City Limits). He was interviewed by Sir Elton John on his Apple Music podcast\, Rocket Hour\, and recently released a duet with Bootsy Collins. In January 2021\, Ingram was simultaneously on the covers of both Guitar World and DownBeat magazines\, and graced the cover of Living Blues in late 2020. Rolling Stone declared\, “Kingfish is one of the most exciting young guitarists in years\, with a sound that encompasses B.B. King\, Jimi Hendrix and Prince.” \n\n\n\nIn the two years since Kingfish was released\, there have been major events that have altered his life both personally and professionally. “There has been much change\, happiness and despair in my life\,” Ingram says of his last two years. Right as his career was taking off\, he lost his mother and biggest champion\, the late Princess Pride Ingram. Christone toured for 13 months non-stop\, until the pandemic halted live performances and forced him to take stock. As he was thinking about the man he was becoming and the new directions his life was taking\, he began writing songs for his next album\, 662. The number 662 is the telephone area code for Ingram’s northern Mississippi home\, and it first came into use the same year he was born—1999. \n\n\n\n“The world was introduced to me with Kingfish\,” Ingram says of his chart-topping debut. “Now with 662\, I want the world to hear and meet a different\, more personal side of me.” The album—recorded in Nashville and co-written and produced (as was Kingfish) by Grammy-winner Tom Hambridge—features 13 songs displaying many sides of Ingram’s dynamic personality\, as well as his one-of-a-kind guitar and vocal skills. According to Ingram\, “662 is a direct reflection of my growth as a musician\, a songwriter\, a bandleader\, and as a young man. This album was written during the pandemic\, shortly after I returned home from a whirlwind year and a half of touring and promoting Kingfish.
