FOR FREE! Nick Waterhouse brings a powerful 8 piece band to TACAW to get us all moving. \n\n\n\nNick grew up in a coastal town near Long Beach\, CA. It was a serene setting: the ocean stretching out for miles to the North and South\, manicured lawns\, two-story homes\, long swathes of concrete highway\, fast food chains and mega malls. He was there for two decades. Then\, he left. \n\n\n\nHe found a home in his early 20s in San Francisco\, working at record stores alongside a collective of like minded young crate-diggers and 45 collectors. And then he started making his own records: “Time’s All Gone” in 2012\, “Holly” in 2014\, “Never Twice” in 2016\, “Nick Waterhouse” in 2019. These were evocative albums\, steeped in a perfectionism and clarity of vision that informed every choice\, from the studios to the players\, the arrangements to the album art. Everything\, deliberately designed and purposeful\, bubbling over with power and feeling. And as those records rolled out into the world\, Waterhouse found a dedicated audience of his own as well as a bevy of influential champions and collaborators\, including garage-rock mystic Ty Segall\, retro-futurist R&B bandleader Leon Bridges and the LA-based quartet Allah-Las\, whose first two albums he meticulously produced and played on. There is a “Waterhouse Sound” and it comes from both the man and the method — recording everything on magnet- ic tape\, through analog equipment\, and playing live (!)\, eyeball to eyeball\, whenever possible. \n\n\n\nNow\, he’s finished his fifth album. Nick Waterhouse takes the color blue as his hue of choice as he takes a spiritual look to the past on new album\, ‘Promenade Blue’ due out April 9 on Innovative Leisure. \n\n\n\nThe new collection sparkles beatifically\, reverberating with energy\, heart\, creativity\, and vibe from start to finish. Nowhere is this more evident than on the album’s opening track\, “Place Names\,” bringing teenaged memories to the forefront\, pondering the pride he takes in his hometown and the distinct life that he has made (or that has made him). Josefina has assembled another amazing group of players for the evening. Seriously. Check out these bios. \n\n\n\nJosefina Mendez – Vocalist \n\n\n\nJosefina Mendez started studying music and training her voice at the age of 15 in her home town of Buenos Aires Argentina. Even though her voice lessons were Italian Opera\, her passion and practice was jazz. At the age of 18 she was the youngest person to perform with the Argentine National Jazz Orchestra. She moved to the U.S. 21 years ago and for the last 13 years she has been performing in the Roaring Fork Valley. The music performed by Josefina combines rhythms\, melodies\, and different performance traditions that surpass the boundaries between language and culture. \n\n\n\nWalter Gorra – Piano \n\n\n\nWalter Gorra is an award-winning pianist\, composer and arranger based out of the New York/New Jersey metro area. Currently 28 years old\, Walter graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder Magna Cum Laude and High Honors in May 2017 with the following three degrees – MS Structural engineering\, BM Jazz Piano and BS Civil Engineering. He then pursued a master’s degree in Jazz Composition and Arranging at William Paterson University in New Jersey\, graduating in May 2019. \n\n\n\nIn 2016\, Walter led his Colorado quartet in a two-month residency at the Denver jazz club – Nocturne Jazz and Supper Club; performing his original music and arrangements. After completing this residency\, he and his group\, the Walter Gorra Quartet\, dove into the studio to record Walter’s debut album “In Due Time” which was released August 1\, 2018. “In Due Time” was nominated for the 17th annual Independent Music Awards (The IMAs) as “Best Jazz Instrumental Album” and in September of 2018 was selected as CD of the month by KUVO Jazz in Denver\, CO. In Walter’s own words “music is a way to express oneself in a way that is often more powerful than words. Through my compositions and my playing I can describe people\, places and experiences in the best way that I can. My debut album\, ‘In Due Time\,’ is really a snapshot of many of the events and people that have influenced me as a musician and as a person.” \n\n\n\nIn 2015\, Walter was one of 30 young artists selected by KUVO during their 30th Anniversary year\, as part of their “30 Under 30” campaign given them the spotlight and opportunity to have their audience become acquainted with them and their music. In February of 2015\, Walter received a grant from the Boettcher Foundation to present and play with NEA Jazz Master Paquito D’Rivera in a master class and concert. The group\, “The Walter Gorra Septet” played with Paquito D’Rivera at the KUVO radio studios in Denver\, at the University of Colorado Boulder during a masterclass\, and at the Mount Vernon Country Club in Denver. \n\n\n\n Gonzalo Teppa – Bass \n\n\n\n2 time Latin Grammy Nominee for “Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album” and “Best Latin Jazz Album”\, for work on the recordings “Tiempo” by Linda Briceño; and “3rd Element” by Luisito Quintero. \n\n\n\nNamed “Best Jazz Soloist” by Downbeat Magazine in 2004\, 2005\, and 2006. \n\n\n\nReceived “Best Jazz Soloist” award at the Greeley Jazz Festival in 2004 and 2005. \n\n\n\nPerformed with: Wynton Marsalis\, Jeff “Tain” Watts\, Matt Wilson\, Ed Simon\, Chris Potter\, Tom Harrell\, Ron Miles\, Art Lande\, Slide Hampton\, Don Byron\, Jeremy Pelt\, Ben Goldberg\, and others. \n\n\n\nAlejandro Castaño – Drums \n\n\n\nAlejandro Castaño is an active performer and educator in the United States and abroad. A rural Albertan hailing from the foothills of the Rocky Mountains with a long family lineage of ranchers and rodeo people\, Lund is about as authentic as they come. Embracing both his Western heritage and his indie rock past through his music\, Lund has been known to filter a range of cowboy themes past and present through his unique lens-from rough-and-tumble tales of lawless frontier saloons to the somber realities of running a modern family ranch. \n\n\n\nLund released his highly anticipated album Agricultural Tragic via New West Records on June 26th\, 2020\, his first album of original songs in five years\, to much acclaim; the album debut inside the top 5 in both the US and Canada. She began as a member of the Denver Folk Pop septet\, Paper Bird\, and has since released four records as a solo act. The New York Times describes her voice as “wiry and candid” with songs that “hint at mystery and mortality”. Esmé Patterson’s fourth studio album\, There Will Come Soft Rains\, is named after the Sara Teasdale poem of the same name which inspired Ray Bradbury’s sci-fi short story collection The Martian Chronicles. \n\n\n\nThere Will Come Soft Rains revolves around the constant cycle of creation and destruction. A process that Patterson felt reflected the sonic direction she started moving in on 2016’s We Were Wild\, and which she delves deeper into on her newest effort\, and first for BMG. “It’s about how life continues on this planet after humans inevitably wipe ourselves out\,” the Denver-based artist says. “The songs echo the surrender of starting over and failing and starting over again many times. I was hoping to convey the bittersweet peace of letting go alongside the courage to start again\, being swallowed by fear and pain and coming out the other side stronger.” \n\n\n\nThe album follows the Grand Jury Music release of 2016’s critically acclaimed We Were Wild and marks her new partnership with BMG. Patterson got her start in the mid-aughts with her band Paper Bird and went on to release her first solo album\, All Princes\, I\, in 2012. She began touring with Shakey Graves in 2014\, in between albums and her own tours\, and co-wrote three songs for his 2014 album\, And The War Came\, while also releasing her “defiant and witty” (The Guardian) second solo album Woman To Woman in 2015. Patterson has frequently collaborated with the likes of Craig Finn\, William Elliot Whitmore\, William Ryan Fitch and many more. \n\n\n\nPatterson’s music is constantly evolving but that has never been as obvious and crucial as it is on There Will Come Soft Rains. Jangly guitars and glowing synths build on the direction of We Were Wild and mark a stark transition from the folkier sound of her previous works. Raw vocals lay bare against fellow Denver duo Tennis’ shiny production and surfy dream pop. For the album Patterson and Tennis holed up in the band’s garage for 12 days in 2018 in the scorching hot Denver summer to record the album\, but she has been conceptualizing it since 2015. “I feel like I’ve been continually rising from the ashes\,” she says. “Being born and dying again.” \n\n\n\nOver ten songs\, Patterson yearns for true love\, bemoans sexual frustration and capitalism\, questions the afterlife\, and ponders suicidal ideation. The album opens with the ectastic “Shelby Tell Me Everything” a “sweet and innocent gay love song”. She wrote “Out The Door\,” a deceptively upbeat meditation on what happens to our souls when we die\, while living with her dying grandmother. The dusty and delicate guitar-led “Momentito” is about living in the present\, surrendering to what we can and can’t control. \n\n\n\nThe darkest moment and brightest light come in the middle of the tracklist. The twinkly piano number “All Mine” takes us back to when Patterson lived in a motel room by the highway. “I was dealing with constant suicidal thoughts for several months\, and through writing\, writing this song specifically\, I found an anchor\,” she says. “I knew at the center of my being…that I was enough\, that I was ok\, that I could take suicide off the table permanently\, and never go back\, that I was fine being all mine and loneliness too shall pass\, it comes and goes\, and there is beauty to be found in all of it.” \n\n\n\nThroughout her new album Esme Patterson weaves in and out of overtly personal stories of love and loss\, but true to the namesake of There Will Come Soft Rains\, and in the tradition of classic sci-fi\, she looks towards the future with tenacity and a passionate resolve to see what comes next. Always with an eye on the optimistic\, the end of pain and struggle\, Esme’s songs are imbued with acceptance and hope. Patterson knows\, and wants us all to remember\, that these cycles are natural\, our highs compliment our lows but the beauty of life is finding balance between the two. But for Todd Snider\, his latest release\, First Agnostic Church of Hope and Wonder (2021)\, isn’t so much a sudden change in direction as an arrival after years of searching. \n\n\n\nSince debuting in 1994\, Snider has gone through his own incarnations. His first single “Talking Seattle Blues” was a head fake that might’ve pointed to goofy novelty songs. But he quickly showed that his artistic quiver was much deeper and more interesting. A storyteller who works a similar creative soil to John Prine and Shel Silverstein\, Snider’s best songs are both sad and funny\, political and entertaining\, and always written with a poet’s eye and a stand-up comedian’s sensibility about the follies of human condition. \n\n\n\nWhile he’s made twenty fine albums\, it’s on stage where Snider is even more potent\, with between-song banter that weaves subtle emotional threads through his sets. A road dog who loves the road\, Snider has toured with Emmylou Harris\, John Prine\, Jimmy Buffett\, and appeared at festivals like Farm Aid\, Newport Folk Fest\, Lockn’ and Telluride Bluegrass Festival. \n\n\n\nSnider was born in Portland\, Oregon\, and lived there until his family moved to Houston\, Texas. When he was 15\, he ran away from home with a friend and went back to Portland. After high school\, he moved to Santa Rosa\, California\, to be a harmonica player. Then his brother\, who lived in Austin\, Texas\, bought him a ticket to come live there. After seeing Jerry Jeff Walker in a local bar\, Snider decided that he didn’t need a band to be a musician. \n\n\n\nAfter moving to Memphis\, Tennessee\, in the mid-1980s and establishing residency at a club named the Daily Planet\, he was discovered by Keith Sykes\, a member of Jimmy Buffett‘s Coral Reefer Band. A longtime acquaintance of John Prine and Walker\, Sykes began to work with Snider to help advance his career. Prine hired him as an assistant and then invited him to open shows. In time\, Buffett heard Snider’s demo tapes and signed him to his own label. On his music\, Snider has said “I was just trying to come up with the best … most open hearted … well-thought-out lyrics I could come up with. I wanted every song to be sad and funny at the same time\, vulnerable and entertaining at the same time\, personal and universal at the same time. I wanted every song to be as uniquely written as possible and then I wanted to perform them in a studio loose and rugged and hopefully as uniquely as I could. My hope is to be hard to describe and/or new … I’m not saying I am. As a young teenager\, he worked with legendary indie label Drive-Thru Records and helped book bands like Hello Goodbye\, and by the time he turned 18\, he’d already moved to New York City for a gig with Atlantic Records. When the job fell through\, though\, Frasco made a leap of faith and decided to launch his own career as an artist\, taking everything he’d learned working with other bands and applying it to himself. \n\n\n\nInitially\, Frasco hired local pickup musicians off of Craigslist to back him for gigs\, but soon he put together a steady(ish) lineup\, and Andy Frasco & The U.N. began taking the world by storm. The group would release a series of acclaimed records\, share bills with the likes of Leon Russell\, Galactic\, Gary Clark\, Jr.\, The Revivalists\, and Marcus King among others\, and slay festival stages everywhere from Mountain Jam in the U.S. to Rock am Ring in Germany and COTAI Jazz & Blues in China (this summer\, Frasco will perform at multiple summer festivals including Summer Camp\, FloydFest and hopefully many more to be announced). NME hailed the constantly evolving group as “party-starting touring stalwarts\,” while Relix praised their “raucous energy\,” and Clash lauded their live show as a “nightly high-octane experience that doubles as a celebration of life and music…energized by a powerfully entertaining multi-cultural soundtrack that will shake the foundations of all nearby structures.” \n\n\n\nEvery party has to end sometime\, though\, and while it seemed Frasco was living out his rock and roll dreams on his 2019 and early 2020 tours\, he was facing an internal darkness few knew about. \n\n\n\n“I hit a breaking point\,” he explains. “I was sitting alone in my van\, and I realized that I didn’t know who my friends were. Worse\, I didn’t know who I was. I was drinking too much\, I was addicted to cocaine\, and I was dealing with really heavy depression. I even contemplated suicide\, but I decided that if I’m fortunate enough to leave behind a legacy\, I didn’t want to be remembered just as some good-time party guy. I wanted to show people that I’m more than the crowd-surfing\, Jameson-drinking maniac they see onstage.” \n\n\n\nFrasco began writing poetry that eventually became songs. He wrote about despair and anxiety\, about friendship and growth\, about accountability and potential\, transforming the poems into defiant rock and roll anthems. These songs became his most recent album ‘Keep On Keeping On’ released at the beginning of the pandemic in April of 2020. \n\n\n\nLike many\, the pandemic hit Andy hard. He was once again feeling that ‘breaking point’ and he quickly transformed his high energy road show into a year long digital blitz of new music\, a 33 episode variety show (Andy Frasco’s World Saving ShitShow) which garnered 20 millions views\, a highly attended digital Dance Party and Andy further developed his already successful and compelling podcast (Andy Frasco’s World Saving Podcast). She has assisted Tanowitz on numerous creations including works for the Australian Ballet\, Ballet Austin\, Martha Graham Dance Company\, The Juilliard School\, Paul Taylor American Modern Dance\, Vail Dance Festival\, and others. \n\n\n\nMelissa has taught Cunningham Technique internationally since 2007\, is a 2013 & 2015 Merce Cunningham Fellow\, and is an official Stager for the Merce Cunningham Trust.
